A SLIT’S AUTOBIOGRAPHY

The Slits were an all-female British punk band formed in 1976, the heyday of punk music. The Slits often played and posed topless. Though I liked punk music, I never got into their music. But I did like their attitude displayed in Viv Albertine’s guitar - she's on the right above and in the middle below..

I’ve just bought Viv Albertine’s autobiography, Clothes, Clothes, Clothes. Music, Music, Music. Boys, Boys, Boys. On the first page of her book, she announced that anyone who writes an autobiography is “either a twat or broke” and she confessed that she’s “a bit of both”. Viv Albertine also claimed that she’s never masturbates because she “can’t be bothered”. It promises to be an interesting read.

Do you read autobiographies?
If so, what’s the best autobiography you’ve read?
If you were to write your autobiography, what would your first line be?

Generally I don’t enjoy reading autobiographies; I much prefer reading biographies as they are more likely to be more critically rounded.

If I were to write an autobiography – and I have no plans to – my first and last line would be: “Born on a farm, went to school, studied at university, got a job, got married, got unmarried, bought a house, played football, watched ice hockey, liked Indian food, drank beer and wine, smoked, occasionally had sex, regularly had a shower, and likely to die.”

Yes I read them.

The best I've read....toss up between Stephen Fry's "Moab is my washpot" and Frank McCourt's "Angela's Ashes"

I think I've already started writing it lol!!!

I don't read autobiography. I their life could be summed up in under 10 pages, then I might give it a go. While I'm interested in interesting factoids about people, 500 pages is a long time to hold my interest.

If I was to ever write an autobiography, it would open up with one of two lines.

"Shit! If I would have know that, I wouldn't have..."

"I can't believe you just spent $39.99 to read 500 pages about me. Thanks. What wrong with you."

We come from similar backgrounds, except I don't want to go back to the farm.

I was going to say I've only read one Autobiography - Frank Zappa's "The real Frank Zappa" but I ready Sexy's comment and I've read Stephen Fry's too.
I'm worried that I might have read others and just can't remember...

I don't plan on writing one.
I guess Stephen Fry's autobiography is quite interesting. He is very talented.

That's a great idea - ten pages is more than enough to write about their lives!

Both biographies and autobiographies bore me. Most are incredibly boring.

The first line of my biography, if I was ever dull enough to write one would be the line from the Neneh Cherry/Youssou'n dour song, circa 1994 '7 seconds' which goes "When a child is born, into this world, it has no concept of the tone of skin it's living in' (this could apply to much more than race)...
7 Seconds by Neneh Cherry and Youssou N'Dour was a brilliant song, very haunting.

...I find that most autobiographies are too much like someone taking a self portrait shot in a mirror...to self serving...

.....the last one I read I believe was by Nixon..

    Blue....
I can imagine Nixon's autobiography being slightly detached from the truth!
