APHRODISIAC FOOD
APHRODISIAC FOOD Derived from Aphrodite the Greek goddess of love, an aphrodisiac is a substance that enhances sexual desire. I’ve just read an article extolling the aphrodisiac benefits of apricots, which should not be surprising given that they were called abrecocks in sixteenth-century England. Amy Reiley, the author of Fork Me, Spoon Me: The Sensual Cookbook, claimed that apricots were eaten to enhance women’s fertility in Ancient China and were “commonly served as an aphrodisiac treat” throughout medieval Europe. She also found that Australian aborigine men would sometimes rub crushed apricots on their genitalia before having sex. According to AlterNet, the top ten aphrodisiac foods are: 1. Honey – it contains boron that helps women metabolise their sex hormone, oestrogens, and may even enhance levels of testosterone, the hormone responsible for promoting sexual desire in both men and women 2. Oysters – their high zinc content is thought to increase libido and sperm production 3. Garlic – it contains allicin that increases blood flow 4. Figs – Ancient Greeks associated figs with love and fertility 5. Chocolate – it contains the ‘love chemical’, phenylethylamine 6. Basil – its aroma is reputed to have an aphrodisiac effect 7. Bananas – they're said to be good at enhancing the male libido 8. Avocado – the Aztecs called the avocado tree as the testicle tree 9. Almonds – they've been long regarded as fertility symbols throughout history 10. Asparagus – Nicholas Culpeper, a seventeenth-century botanist, believed that asparagus “stirs up lust in man and woman” Other alleged aphrodisiac foods are berries, carrots, celery, chili peppers, ginseng, deer penis, pumpkin seeds, rhinoceros horn, salamander brandy, salmon, Spanish fly (a beetle), spinach, tiger penis and watermelon. Have you tried any foods or drinks as aphrodisiacs? If so, did they work? Do you like apricots? Scientists are divided whether certain foods are aphrodisiac or not, but scientists have long known that the aphrodisiac effects may be more down to the placebo effect. If people believe that their libido will be enhanced by eating these foods, then, their sexual desire is more likely to be enhanced. I've tried ginseng as an aphrodisiac, but I can’t say I noticed any difference in my libido. I love apricots, and they taste much better than ginseng. |

1. I've eaten everything on that list many times but not with a view to their aphrodisiac effects. 2. I don't remember feeling any more excited or excitable than normal. But that's hard for me to gauge. 3. Yep, ate some spanish apricots a few weeks ago, deelish!

I haven't used any of these herbs or foods as aphrodisiacs but I do have a regular intake of many of them... I swear by the South American herb Guarana for heightening sexual appetite... If it's good quality, it's quite effective. Honey, chocolate and bananas feature in some of my sex play. I like apricots but I prefer peaches. Peaches are fantastic, as are nectarines.

I'd better hide the apricots then ... and the bananas, honey and chocolate!

Beer is a tried-and-tested aphrodisiac. I think Doritos should be regarded as an aphrodisiac fruit. I've just picked these from my Doritos tree! [image]
