A CUNTISH TALE
A CUNTISH TALE I’m not going to beat about the bush, but this post is about the cunt-word. I have just finished reading an interview of Irvine Welsh, the author of Trainspotting, which was turned into the 1998 hit film starring Ewan McGregor. In the interview, Irvine Welsh claimed: “Linguistically, I’ve already made an impact on the world. I noticed that ‘cunt’ and ‘cuntish’ recently made it into the Oxford English Dictionary, which I feel I must take some responsibility for.” In Trainspotting, Irvine Welsh wrote such lines as “You fucking knew that fucking cunt would fuck some cunt” and “Sorry mate, ah sais, feelin cuntish”. The feminist Germaine Greer described the cunt-word as “one of the few remaining words in the English language with a genuine power to shock.” It remains a taboo word. Feminists have long challenged the use of the cunt-word. The journalist Kathleen Deveny described the cunt-word as “the rudest, crudest, most taboo term in the English language, the superstar of four-letter words”. However, a few feminists have sought to reclaim the word, just as some gays have adopted the queer-word and some blacks the nigger-word. Eve Ensler, The Vagina Monologues’ playwright, wrote: “I call it cunt. I’ve reclaimed it, ‘cunt.’ I really like it. ‘Cunt.’ Listen to it. ‘Cunt.’” Though it has not always been the case, the cunt-word is widely regarded as an offensive and, in some quarters, even a taboo word in the English language. But I’ll save that tale for another post; otherwise, I’ll go on and on! Do you ever use the cunt-word? If so, what do you mean by the word? What words are most offensive or taboo to you? Have you read or seen Trainspotting and The Vagina Monologues? For me, context is everything – how the word is meant, how it is received and the situation it is used. I’ve been called a cunt quite a few times, and I’ve used the cunt-word many times. Sometimes as banter, I use the word to mock my male friends. And sometimes as part of sex, I use the word with partners. I never mean to offend with the cunt-word, just as this post is not meant to cause offence. |

This word is very offensive to me. I do not even want to type the letters. I also don't like slut, whore. I have not read the books but heard of the Monologues!

1. I use the word on a regular basis, but not in an inappropriate place, nor generally in any way that someone else might find it offensive. 2. None really, in the right company of course. For me, I'm difficult to offend with sweary words, but I don't for example like to hear bad language used indiscriminately in other situations by other people where it could be offensive. 3. Yes, and no. The words cuntish and cunted have been in regular use in Jockland since before Welsh was born. Why does that little cunt get to claim the 'plaudits' for them??

It is a word I use sometimes during sex. 'put it in my c***' type thing I will also use it in very very extreme cases of life threat. When a car almost ran me over. And yes saw Trainspotting but found it to offense for me An orgasm a day , makes you so much happier at work and play

It's a very versatile word, and one I'm not afraid to use I also like variations, such as "cunting" - as in "You cunting cunt!"

You don't come across as prudish to me. Some people find the word offensive, and some less offensive. The word is rarely used as a compliment.

I've used it and continue to use it. I think it's a much better word than many of the made up names for female genitalia. Using it in that context is difficult because of the offence it can cause when used unthinkingly. I don't always think. Normally when I use it, I use it to mean a male behaving in a selfish and damaging way. I used it a LOT more when I lived in Birmingham. It's much more common in the Midlands - Nottingham? - Not sure. I believe the original meaning is "Pocket" in one of the Germanic languages - hardly offensive. I don't think I have words I think of as taboo but I do have thoughts I find very distasteful. Those might be considered taboo. Typically I really don't like oppression of anyone and I react badly to discussion of the "R" word in any positive context. I've read Trainspotting and seem the film. I found the book to be very dark and quite depressing. The film however was very funny. It might have been less funny if I'd not read the book first. Irvine Welsh is a guy who seems to fit the description of a bit of a cunt. I've not seen the Vagina Monologues.

The cunt word may precede the Anglo-Saxons; etymologists are in dispute over its origins.

I do use the word, fairly often... When I use it, it's intended to mean a deeply loathsome individual of either sex, or an object that is not functioning as design intends (I call my phone a "cunt" several times a week) and I would never use it in relation to the vagina because I find its use in that context deeply offensive. The word I most hate is "slut" because although it can reasonably be used to describe a sexually indiscriminant person of either sex, it is usually inflicted upon women to insult them into denying their sexual needs to avoid the tag. I have seen Trainspotting.

I think that when most people use the word cunt as an insult are not consciously thinking of a woman's anatomy. Being called a dick or knob is often used for low acts/people. Words!

I had a girlfriend who used it a lot, in many different contexts from degrading to praising! She also used it during sex, which was interesting. Personally, I don't use the word, even though the origin is benign.

......Dude...the word "CUNT"..should be banished from the guy's handbook.....never call a woman a cunt..or a cow...it will immediately destroy your relationship with her...and start running... Blue...
