EUROVISION

The Eurovision Song Contest is so bad, it’s good. Last night, I had friends around for the Eurovision Song Contest. Eurovision is an annual song competition between European countries (or, to be more specific, members of the European Broadcasting Union). It’s been going since 1956.

Each European country (plus Israel) puts forward an artist to sing a live song to be put to a Europe-wide vote. Eurovision launched Abba when they won the contest in 1974 with Waterloo. Cliff Richard, Céline Dion and Julio Iglesias - for the UK, Switzerland and Spain respectively - have also entered Eurovision. In 1974 Olivia Newton-John sang the song, Long Live Love, for the UK in Eurovision.

This year, the bearded lady from Austria won Eurovision. Yes, the drag queen Conchita Wurst won this year’s Eurovision– see photo above. Brilliant!

The UK used do quite well in Eurovision, but not anymore – Sandie Shaw, Lulu, Brotherhood of Man, Bucks Fizz, and Katrina and the Waves have all won. But since non-English-speaking countries have entered songs sung in English and since the collapse of the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia increased the number of eastern European countries voting for each other, the UK has done shit! Ireland has the most Eurovision wins, partly thanks to Dana and Johnny Logan.

Getting nul points for a song is seen as a success. In 1962, Austria, Belgium, Netherlands and Spain were the first counties to get nul points. And in 2003, the UK’s Jemini finally succeeded in getting zero points.

The voting is brilliant; Scandinavian countries give each other top marks, Eastern European countries give Russia high marks (except this year when Russia’s entry was boo-ed because of the problems in Ukraine), and Greece and Cyprus give each other top marks. What chance for the UK!

The UK does shit mainly because our songs are shit. The UK doesn’t take Eurovision seriously, otherwise it would enter Gary Barlow, Moby and One Direction but they wouldn’t perform because they don't need Eurovision! But Eurovision makes for great television viewing – camp, kitsch and cosmopolitan! What more do you want?

Have you watched Eurovision? If so, do you like it?
What does Europe mean to you?

STOP PRESS – EUROVISION UPDATE

Below is the Eurovision winner, the Austrian Conchita Wurst, arriving home fresh from winning Eurovision that was watched by about 180 million people in 45 countries

Conchita Wurst said: “I share the opinion that this was not a victory just for me but for the people who believe in a future that works without discrimination and is based on tolerance and respect.” Conchita Wurst’s victory was widely welcomed in Western Europe.

But the victory was not welcomed in some parts of Eastern Europe and in Russia particularly. One nationalist politician, Vladimir Zhirinovsky, told Rossiya-1 state television: “There's no limit to our outrage. It's the end of Europe. It has turned wild. They don't have men and women any more.... Fifty years ago the Soviet army occupied Austria. We made a mistake in freeing Austria. We should have stayed.”

I didn't watch last night because I forgot it was on....when I did turn on the local station they were halfway through the voting. I thought the winning song was good but his / her crying was too much for me.

I don't really take it seriously but Ireland has done pretty well out of it and of course Riverdance was born on the show.

I never watched it, spunky! Next Saturday, I am taking in "A Tribute To ABBA" with some of the original band members as special guest performers.
I have in the past seen "RiverDance" and "The Spirit of Ireland". Loved both shows....I wish I could dance like they do!

I don't watch...I also do not watch such shows here in the U.S...my husband does.
Europe to me...home. I will always have a soft place for Europe. Though born in California, U.S, my heart was touched by Spain as a child. I feel more European than American. Mostly because it is where I spent my childhood.

Ireland has a fantastic Eurovision record - Dana, Johnny Logan, etc. I think Ireland have one Eurovision more than any other country.

Many a past year I have watched it but when they changed the format a number of years back and had it arranged in a way as to make it less organised, I lost interest. Sometimes I'll watch if they put it on tv as an encore performance. I can't say whether I like it or not overall... Every year there would be songs that I like or performers that I like.

To me Europe means The Final Countdown, Rock The Night and Superstition... Lol
Eurovision has got more rocky since having more countries entering from Eurovision. Check out Poland's pornographic entry this year!

The Polish entry was classic; it's why I watch Eurovision.

Graeme Norton is good, especially having to follow the brilliant Terrry Wogan.
England for the World Cup then?!

Europe feels home to me. Though I've never lived outside England, I identify with Europe just as much as I do with Britain.

They're so sexually progressive in Russia that they ambush and bash and torture gay people and force them to confess to unspeakable crimes against children. There was a big exposé done on it, hosted by Stephen Fry. Nasty, ignorant people.
Russia is becoming a very intolerant place under Tsar Putin.
