I STILL FUCKING HATE THE TORIES  A rant is coming – click away if you don’t want a follow-up of my blog post, I FUCKING HATE THE TORIES. In the UK, the Conservative-led government is about to ban books from prisons. I cannot see any good coming from this. Without condoning the crimes that prisoners have done, I think prisoners reading books can only be good, unless they’re reading a book on ways to escape from prison. This government is only doing this to appeal to the people who think prisoners should be eternally punished. The Italian Marxist, Antonio Gramsci, wrote one of his best works while in prison. His Prison Notebooks (Quaderni del Carcere) were a series of notes written while he was imprisoned by the fascist Mussolini government. Marxists are always dangerous to most regimes. Gramsci’s notebooks were smuggled out of prison and only published after he died. He wrote about the idea of hegemony, whereby a dominant idea squeezes out the serious consideration of other ideas amidst such ideological domination. Gramsci argued that capitalism, which is screwing is most of us, has become a hegemonic idea in that mainstream political debates are all about making capitalism work better for us (or. moreover, a few) and are not about discussing alternatives to capitalism. Often international students ask me the question, ‘what does right-wing or left-wing mean in the UK?’ It’s not an easy question to answer, but my simple answer is that whether you’re right-wing or left-wing is determined by the answer to the question, ‘what should we do about poor people?’. If you say ‘fuck them’, you’re right-wing. If you say, ‘something needs to be done’, you’re left-wing. I know, it’s too simplistic, but sometimes you need to give a simple answer to a simple question. Should prisoners be allowed to read books? What should we do about poor people? Should prisoners be allowed to have sex?  |

I don't know about books but here in Canada they banned TV's and smoking! Books are harmless depending on the books. NO to porn!!  As far as sex in prison....My opinion is "no" but then who am I...I'm not in prison and I get "no" sex!

Why would they want to take away books from prisoners??? So that they become bored and frustrated which in turn will lead to more crime when they get out. I thought prisons were places where people could improve their lives, get better educated etc., so that they would be law abiding citizens on their release. I have no answer on what to do about the poor.....help them as much as possible to help themselves....and not in a way that gets them in prison. The majority of the world's wealth is in the hands of so few and I doubt many of them are going to spread it around.....and even if they did....would it make a difference? ~~Anais Nin~~

Books, Yes Poor people are a product of an imperfect system for the most part. No person left behind is my thinking. If the prisoners decide to break the law and have sex, what will be the punishment?  Find pleasure in giving pleasure

I say yes to books as well. I think it could be difficult stopping prisoners having sex with themselves.

A good read and fascinating images... Prisoners most definitely be allowed to read books, especially books about law. My reasoning is that a lot of minor crimes that people get jailed/gaoled for is because they do not know the law and fail to convince prosecutions and judges of this and are sent-up. They should have all books available to them. Most crimes are committed by undereducated people. Educate them in constructive ways, with useful knowledge, rather than consequential knowledge and they can become more capable of making better decisions. Prisoners will have sex after lights-out whether they're "allowed", or not... They should have condoms available to them but as far as my most recent research goes (I haven't "done time" but have had a few friends who have), they aren't yet allowed, even if brought in by friends or family. The only way to prevent sex between prisoners is total individual isolation for their entire prison term and human rights groups would shit a brick if any correction service got to doing that. Although it would never happen, poverty needs to be tackled on a case by case basis... They should examine why the individual is poor and look at the most individually-tailored ways to resolve the issues. If they are resolvable, sometimes they're not. Right wing folks will argue that people are poor due to lack of education (not always true), too lazy to work (again, not always true). Sometimes, there may be no solution in a constricted work market. Tax breaks for big business doesn't mean they'll employ more people... They will employ as many as they need to produce whatever it is the company produces based upon product demand and not a single person more. Politicians are ignorant fuckwits at the best of times and they're usually elected by morons who have no interest in politics which is the governing factor in their lives. It controls their income, taxes and the infrastructure for their quality of life but most are too ignorant and apathetic to do their research or question election promises, or braindead enough to not understand cause and effect of policy decisions and how they are probably going to be fucked-over.

I've just listened to an interesting radio report about the recent budget measures introduced by the Australian premier, Tony Abbott. It all sounded familiar!

There are many reasons for hating the Tories - I think this is one of the weaker reasons. The policy is rather silly but it is intended to limit the types of items which can be posted into prisons for prisoners. Books take a long time to search - apparently! So, here we have a Tory(ish) government reducing the work load on the highly unionised prison officers? Something doesn't make sense. Prison Officers are lazy idle bastards. Their laziness is rivalled by rail workers but neither are a patch on the NHS and the NHS is a hive of worker efficiency when compared to the Police. It is clear that prisoners still have access to the library system and can still buy books through the prison. I'd really like to see some of the data used to decide the policy. Are books commonly posted to prisoners? Do they really take a long time to search? Are books widely used to smuggle contraband? So, yes - prisoners should be allowed to read. Maybe even made to read? Poor people - fucking them might be impractical. There seem to be a lot of them. Maybe we should cull them, like badgers. Sex for prisoners would be extremely difficult. Once it's made permissible, you'd need to deal with how often are they allowed for sex and how long should each session last? Who would they be allowed to have sex with? How do you ensure that the sex act isn't used as a means of smuggling contraband? Ah! maybe that's why the prison officers wont have time to search books! One way around the prison books issue is for prisoners to have well stocked libraries or even a mobile library visiting prisoners.
