40 DAYS TO GO

Only 40 sleeps to go before the World Cup kicks off in Brazil. It’s the biggest sporting event in the world, far bigger than the Stanley Cup, the Super Bowl and the Olympics.

On 12 June, the hosts Brazil play Croatia in the first game of the World Cup. The final takes place in Rio de Janeiro on 13 July. I have written every game into my diary. For one month, my life will be organised around the World Cup, a carnival of football.

My next job is to buy a World Cup sticker album to keep me amused in the run-up to the big event. I’m starting to get excited even by just writing this post!

There are 32 teams competing in the World Cup finals – Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Brazil, Cameroon, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Croatia, Ecuador, England, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, Iran, Italy, Ivory Coast, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Portugal, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, United States and Uruguay.

Do you like football (or soccer)?
Will you be watching the World Cup?
What country do you think will win the World Cup?

I think the winners of the World Cup will be Brazil, Uruguay or Germany, with Belgium as a long shot. England will not win it; England will do well to get out of the group stages. No European team has ever won the World Cup outside Europe, so that just leaves Brazil and Uruguay, the winners of the first World Cup held in 1930.

Many people fancy Brazil, winners of the World Cup a record five times, to win the World Cup again. But I think the pressure and expectation will get to the host country. So, my prediction is Uruguay to lift the 2014 FIFA World Cup Trophy.

I’ve set up a poll in the hope that people will vote on who they think will win the World Cup. I can only include the top countries as determined by the odds offered by the bookmaker Paddy Power. So, there’s no Australia, Chile, England, France, Ivory Coast, Mexico, Portugal, Russia, Switzerland or United States as they won’t win it ... or will they?

I’ve also posted some images capturing key World Cup moments – Maradona’s Hand of God goal against England in the 1986 World Cup; Maradona taking on six Belgian defenders also in the 1986 World Cup; the brilliant Brazil team that won the 1970 World Cup; the Battle of Santiago between Chile and Italy in the 1962 World Cup; the tears of Paul Gascoigne in the 1990 World Cup; Zinedine Zidane’s headbutt in the 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy; Cesar Menotti, the smoking Argentina manager, at a game in the rigged 1978 World Cup; Pele’s embrace of Bobby Moore after the 1970 World Cup game between Brazil and England; players exchanging flowers before the politically charged game between Iran and United States in the 1998 World Cup; and England’s Bobby Moore lifting the World Cup trophy in 1966.

What team will win the 2014 World Cup?
Argentina
Belgium
Brazil
Colombia
Germany
Italy
Netherlands
Spain
Uruguay
other country

I played more soccer than football when I was younger.... I know you call soccer "football" but I can't because we have both...My grandsons play soccer!
I will guess that either Brazil or Argentina will win!

I love it and my life will be planned around the games. I have a soft spot for Spain so that's who I voted for.

I know it's a long shot, but I gotta root for my home team.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

My head says Brazil will win, my heart wants Colombia to win, and I will of course be supporting Engerland but I think they'll do well if they get to the quarters.

Over here, we call your football American football.
Brazil and Argentina are two good selections to win the World Cup.

In the UK, we call your game American football. I've tried to get into American football but the games seem to last a very long time.

I've read that soccer is getting bigger in America and, as a sectator sport, has overtaken ice hockey.

IMNSHO Soccer is a code within the broader definition of football... To my knowledge, there are 3 other football codes; Rugby Union, Rugby League and Australian Rules and they all call themselves football.

I like Soccer and Australian Rules and used the World Cup of 2010 to distract me from my bereavement in 2010 shortly after the love of my life died. I was so thrilled that Spain won.

I will be watching the World Cup and be very surprised if Germany doesn't win. Other teams that I'd like to see do well are Spain, England, France and Greece.
Spain are a brilliant team, though I suspect they are now past their best to win this World Cup in Brazil.

From mid-June to mid_July, every game will be showed live on television. You'll do well to avoid it all!

Spain are good but are they as good as last time to win it again? I'm not so sure.

The US always do well in recent World Cup Finals. Given that soccer is getting bigger, I think USA's time will be in the future.

It was Paddy Power, and all other bookmakers, not rating Australia. Australia are always a tough team but I'm not sure the have the players to win it, especially in the tropical heat of Brazil.

..I used to be a big fan of football in Spain...but the cable company deleted it for some reason....probable United fans...

if you go into a Irish Pub here in Portland during the finals you could get drunk and or arrested....but mostly drunk

    the sport needs cheerleaders...
I think most football fans would want cheerleaders, but I think most football clubs prefer their fans to spend money in their bars and shops than watching cheerleaders for free.

It may sound strange but the only sport I've ever enjoyed watching is baseball because it's the only sport I've played.
I've only been to one baseball game - New York Mets and Atlanta Braves, but I didn't really understand it!

Canada does have a soccer team but unfortunately they didn't qualify for the World Cup finals. A few Canadians play in the English Premier League.

Brazil have been a brilliant team. I think the 1970 Brazilian team was the best ever - Carlos Alberto, Pelé, Gérson, Jairzinho, Rivelino and Tostão were superb players.

Colombia have a good chance of winning. I still remember Escobar getting shot after one World Cup finals.

Only three people voted for Germany, the eventual winners of the 2014 World Cup.
