GABO’S FUNERAL

I guess there is no such thing as a good funeral. Though sad, melancholic and sometimes tragic, many funerals I’ve been to have been very uplifting, celebratory and even comical.

Often called Gabo throughout Latin America, Gabriel García Márquez was a celebrated novelist born in Colombia. His most famous novels were One Hundred Years of Solitude, The Autumn of the Patriarch and Love in the Time of Cholera.

Many leading politicians, including Fidel Castro, Bill Clinton and Yasser Arafat, befriended or at least like to be photographed with Gabriel García Márquez. The author played a key role in facilitating negotiations between the Colombian government and the FARC and other guerrilla movements operating in the country.

Last week, it was Gabriel García Márquez’s funeral held in Mexico City where he lived. His funeral looked like a very moving send-off – see the three photos below, interspersed with a few of his phrases.

Have you read any of Gabriel García Márquez’s novels? If so, what was your favourite novel?
Have you made any plans for your funeral?
What song would you have played at your funeral?

I’m not going to ask whether you’ve had sex at a funeral but, if you have and you post a confession, your confession will be treated with the utmost confidentiality that this site allows! I’ve not had sex at a funeral. Also, I’ve not made any plans for my funeral, but I intend to.

Leaf Storm was also good. I have read a few of his books. A sad loss to be sure.
As to my funeral, my only request is that I be cremated. I have told my children, what they do with me after that is their business...Grieving is for the living.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Like pal, I have not heard of Gabo! No plans made yet but have insurance plan to cover costs.
I want "Amazing Grace" played by bagpipes and then mourners sing "For He's a Jolly Good Fella"!

I had heard of him and quite liked a few of his quotes.

I have told my children that I want a simple...non religious cremation and have chosen the songs to be played.....mainly because I like to have the last wrod!

I can't decide whether to be cremated or buried. It's something I need to decide as people increasingly ask me. I'm getting older!!!

I'm planning on a simple funeral too. Beer for everyone sounds a good idea.

Pipers playing Amazing Grace will make for a very moving send-off.
In the UK, funeral costs come out of the deceased's estate.

I've had no interest in his writings, he probably wouldn't have had much in mine either so I feel no guilt. Some people gain renown and kudos for their insights that improve mankind, others may never be discovered.

I haven't made any plans for my funeral but would prefer to be buried and would hope that at least a handful of people attend.

The "song" I would have played at my funeral would be 'Orchestral Theme From Temptation' by Heaven17... A heart-rending musical piece to invoke the waterworks and because I really can be a pompous, pretentious twat sometimes.

I've never had sex at a funeral but I hope there will be plenty at mine after the weeping stops (if there's to be any).
I'm not a big fan of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's novels. I just like him because he tried to make a difference politically.
I remember Heaven 17. I think playing Human League's Don't You Want Me would be quite funny at a funeral.

I need to start making plans for my funeral and I need to make a will to stop my brother getting it all! I have no kids.

I'm planning a non-religious funeral. I hope it'll be a celebration, that's if anyone turns up!

I've tried to read Gabriel Garcia Marquez's books but haven't enjoyed them much. I liked his politics though.
I love Morcheeba's music. If you like Morcheeba, you may also like Massive Attack, Portishead and Zero 7.

Good grief! That would be hilarious... So would 'It's my party and I'll cry if I want to', especially if the sound of crying could be heard emanating from the coffin.

That would be a classic funeral.
