A SHIT ZOO

Above is a Shih Tzu dog. Below is a human zoo for lions to visit!

A while back, I once went to a zoo and found that the zoo had only one animal to look at – a dog. My friend asked me what it was like. I said, “It’s a Shih Tzu!”

Regarding zoos, I am a bit ambivalent about them. Generally I feel animals should be free in the wild and I’m not totally convinced about zoos’ claims that their work helps to conserve certain endangered species.

The best zoo I’ve visited was Belfast Zoo. The worst zoo I’ve visited was the Natura Artis Magistra, a zoo in Amsterdam, as many of its animals were kept in very confined enclosures. When visiting zoos, I always like seeing the penguins, meerkats and dolphins.

Do you like zoos?
What animals do you most like seeing at zoos?
What’s your most favourite and least favourite zoo?

1. Nope, I find it difficult to believe that animals would ever choose to live in their own shit in their own worlds, the stench is appalling!
2. I like the big birds, but then I keep thinking about them in captivity with their wings clipped, bah!
3. There's a Durrell wildlife park on Jersey which I thought was OK, but all other zoos are 'orrible.

I'm no tree hugger or animal rights activist as such, I just hate the stench of zoos!

I haven't been to the Zoo in a long time. I do like seeing the animals up close, but it's an unnatural environment for the animals, no matter how big the enclosure is.

I quite like zoos....Dublin Zoo is good and the animals are in as natural a habitat as possible. My favourite are the seals and penguins.

I don't like Regent's Park Zoo at all...I don't think the animals have enough space.

I am more a fan of wildlife sanctuary's. My mother (regardless of my feelings for her) was a wildlife rehabber. I helped nurse many varieties of animals. Some were nursed back to health and other's were placed in sanctuaries'. WE have one in Savannah that is used for education.
Zoo's most often are just sad.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

We have no zoos nearby but I have been to a couple. The one in Philadelphia and a tiny one at a seaside town. We'll be in that seaside town this summer and will likely take the little one.

I'm torn on the subject as I too question the zoos' claims of conservation. I don't really have a favorite animal although the capybaras amuse me. They're like guinea pigs dosed with radiation.
I've not heard of capybaras before your post. I had to look them up - they look cute.
Thanks for dropping by.

I like the big cats at zoos, provided they have big enclosures.

As I lived on a farm, I can handle the stench of zoos. One of the few perks of a farming childhood!

It's much better to see animals in the wild.

I should have added seals to my list of favourite zoo animals.

I adore Shih Tzu dogs and similar cute breeds Pomeranians, Maltese Terriers, Papillons but not so much Chihuahuas.

I have similar reservations about zoos that you do and prefer most animals to roam freely, obviously not as good an idea with big cats who would treat us as prey.

I like to visit the lemurs, meerkats, otters, giraffes, seals and the monkeys... They're all very beautiful and pachyderms fascinate me
    but the smell... Peee-ewww!

The only zoo I've ever been to is Sydney Australia's world renown Taronga Park Zoo.
Otters are cute. Have you seen the two otter films, Tarka the Otter and Ring of Bright Water? They made me cry!

Like you, I'm not a big fan of zoos. I guess they may raise awareness of animals for humans to treat them better, but I'm not sure.

My parents and grandparents often took me to the nearby zoo. There were also school trips to zoos.

Nursing animals back to health sounds a very rewarding task, especially if they made it back to the wild.

I haven't seen those otter films. If they made you cry, they'd probably make me inconsolable for hours. I have seen them in nature documentaries and they are beautiful, gentle, creative, intelligent beings. I'd love to visit the wilds of Canada and see them up close in their natural environment.
The films were also books. There are lots of otters in Britain as well.

That gives me an extra reason to visit Britain if my finances improve and I can get my documentary proof of identity issues resolved. I'd love to see the sites of Nottingham in person. Seeing you taking a shower would be the highlight.
Nottingham is a lovely city, though I don't think there'll be many otters unless we take a long walk along the river.
