SNAILS

As today, 22 April, is Earth day, I thought I would post a blog with a naturalist theme - snails. Above is a photo of one snail, and below is a photo of two snails having sex and a photo of six snails cooking in a pan.

As part of National Gardening Week in the UK, the Royal Horticultural Society found that 78 per cent of gardeners have never thrown a snail into their neighbour’s garden. Put another way, 22 per cent of gardeners have thrown snails into neighbouring gardens. Londoners (30 per cent) were far more likely to lob snails to their neighbours than the Scottish (14 per cent).

What do you do with snails you find in the garden?
Have you eaten snails? If so, what were they like?
Have you ever kept snails as a pet?

I have thrown snails into my neighbour’s garden, because I wanted to give them a second chance in life. I have never eaten snails.

As a small , I had my own travelling circus, though I was only allowed to take it to my grandparents’ homes. The finale of the show was the act of a snail slivering along a piece of string tied at each end about one foot above the floor. The floor was always carpeted in case anyone thinks I was cruel! I also had a ladybird and a one-wing fly to entertain the audience, but the snail was always the star of the show.

I just leave them alone. I've never had one as a pet nor have I ever eaten one!

I leave them alone and they leave me alone. Wouldn't want to eat one.
I too leave them alone and I've never eaten snails.

I've never eaten snails. And I leave them alone now after I've outgrown my circus days.

I've not eaten snails; the thought of eating them just doesn't appeal to me.

At last, I've found someone else who kept a snail as a pet.

78% of UK gardeners are liars? They seem such a trustworthy lot too.

I've done all sorts with snails. When I was more serious about gardening, I would collect them with the slugs. Drown them in a bucket then put them on the compost.

I have eaten snails several times. They are chewy and don't taste of much. When done in the French style all you can taste is garlic.

I've never kept them as pets but I have put them in jars and watched them for a while.
I was also surprised that over three-quarters of gardeners don't throw snails into their neighbour's garden.

I think snails like being tossed; they get somewhere faster!

I've never eaten a snail. The thought of eating snails just doesn't appeal to me. I'm not very adventurous in my eating habits.

Whenever a snail wanders into the path of peril and risks being crunched underfoot, I lift the poor little love off the pavement and carry it back to the soil and drop it onto the garden. Wishing it a long and happy life.

Eating escargot is not something I imagine not causing me uncontrollable gagging, it's the texture that puts me off.

I haven't kept snails as pets but I'd love to discover whether they're very intelligent, or not. They certainly are fascinating.
I can't eat snails because of the thought of their slimy, chewy texture.
You sound like the snails' guardian angel.

Keeping snails was a massive responsibility and occupied much of my time! They're not easy to house-train!
