NURSES ARE DIRTY  Dirty nurse above; clean nurse below! In the UK, the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) recently claimed that one in 16 patients in NHS hospital wards develop infections, such as MRSA, because of poor hygiene of NHS staff. NICE calculated that 300,000 patients a year are infected by a member of staff or by dirty equipment. It estimated that these infections cause 5,000 patient deaths each year. NICE called the situation “unacceptable”, believed that many deaths can be avoided if doctors and nurses simply washed their hands, and issued new guidelines to NHS staff. The guidelines suggest staff should wash their hands regularly and NHS managers should check that doctors and nurses have washed their hands. The actress Amanda Redman revealed that her elderly mother, after being admitted to hospital for a routine operation, almost died four times after contracting potentially lethal infections from dirty nurses. I was a medical technician for a few years, working in hospitals and nursing homes. During that time, I lived with a nurse.
