ARE YOU A POGONOPHILE?

ARE YOU A POGONOPHILE?

A pogonophile is someone who likes beards. Beards have been in increasing fashion over recent years, led by the celebrity beards of Christian Bale, David Beckham and Ryan Gosling and allegedly nurtured by the hipsters of Manhattan.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales selected 1,453 bisexual and heterosexual women and 213 heterosexual men for their experiments. They found that the more people were exposed to images of men with beards, the less they found them attractive.

One of the researchers, Robert Brooks, said that there “is a lot of faddishness with beards” and predicted that beards will go out of fashion very soon. “The bigger the trend gets”, he added, “the weaker the preference for beards”; this phenomenon is called negative frequency-dependent sexual selection.

Put simply, men grow beards when most men don’t have beards in order to stand out to attract sexual partners; and, men will shave their beards off when most men have beards for the same reason. This may explain why fashions are cyclical. I’ve still got my tank-tops but they’ve never come back into fashion ... yet!

Are you a pogonophile or a pogonophobe?
Does sex make a difference when there’s a beard about?
If a man, do you have a beard and have you had beard in the past?

I am a pogonophobe. It’s not that I’ve got anything against men with beards; it’s more that I cannot grow a ‘proper’ beard and I am denied this choice, which, I say, is a breach of my human rights!

Have worn a mustache since I was 20, had beards off and on but they get itchy in hot weather and its hard to fit a diving mask around, so they have to go sooner or later.

Some ladies like them. some don't...same with the mustache, but echoing Cesar Romero..... I would rather lose the lady than the mustache!

I'm not very fond of beards. My late husband had one and it or maybe HE has put me off them!

The two guitarists shown in your picture are from ZZ Top and their drummer Frank Beard doesn't have a beard.

I am a lifetime moustache guy. I have had the moustache since I was around 17, never been without it. I grow a beard after Thanksgiving in November through January or February, when I cut back to a goatee, then in Spring back to the moustache only.

I had a moustache in my late teens, and got rid of it when I was 21. It allowed me to buy alcohol underage initially then it just became part of me. As an adult I had a goatee for a few month, but now I am clean shaven, except for when I am to lazy to shave. Hair in generally tends to make me look older, as you can see the gray creeping in.

I had a very red beard in my younger days but shaved it off around 1995. Last year I decided to grow a goatee that grew in grey and whiteish. I do put on a fake white beard at Christmas time, but you know that!

I hope you've never had to choose between a woman or a moustache.
Thanks for dropping by.

Even if I could grow a beard, I don't think I would grow one as there's upkeep issues.

Though I don't have a beard, my hair is often scruffy - I call it the just-out-of-bed look!

I didn't know ZZ Top's drummer was called Frank Beard. Amazing!

I'm absolutely a pogonohpile but not a fan of thick or straggly beards. I love the unshaven stubble look and feel.

    No sandpaper, no pash-rash!

Nature does deny some people their basic human rights...
I can't even do the unshaven stubble look. My human rights are further denied!

Never mind a beard, I can't even grow a decent moustache!

If I don't shave for a few days, I look like a teenager with bum-fluff!

Whenever I've grown beards, I find they HURT. Not just itchiness but a dull ache where the hair follicles get stimulated by having hair growing!

I look like a balding Yetti too. Not a good look.
You've made a good case for not growing a beard. At least I have an ache-free face.

I am a fan of shorter, well-kept beards and goatees - NOT the kind shown in the picture.

Two guys in my office have beards that I think look just awful. Strangely, both men have very short hair on their heads. One has a very long (about a foot) and bushy beard, and (other than the short hair on his head), he looks like someone who has been living in the bush for months, with no access to a razor.

The other guy is quite short, and sports a longish, thin, very-pointy beard, which I think makes him look a bit like a leprechaun.

Check out my profile or and become a "watcher" of my blog FMAOPLS,to learn more about me, and for intelligent, lively, smartassy and fun discussion, with a little irreverence thrown in. "Like" or comment on my photos, and I promise I'll add more. Thanks.

Both those beards you describe just don't seem right for those men!
