"LOCAL COUPLE HAVE SEX WHILE TSUNAMI STRIKES"

That was the headline of my local newspaper, the Nottingham Post, the day after the Boxing Day Tsunami that hit many places around the Indian Ocean on 26 December 2004. The newspaper article’s sub-title was “Nottingham couple caught having sex on a Spanish beach while tsunami hits Bali”!

I love how local newspapers and television stations desperately try to connect their local area to a newsworthy event in a far-flung place. When I used to live in Coventry, on the day after Saddam Hussein ordered Iraqi troops to invade Kuwait on 2 August 1990, the front page headline of the local newspaper, the Coventry Evening Telegraph, was “War in the Gulf, City Bus Fares To Rise”!

Accidentally funny headlines are good as well. Very recently, the BBC News website led with the headline, “Pistorius prosecution into last leg”, when reporting about the ongoing murder trial of Oscar Pistorius in South Africa.

Britain’s most read newspaper, The Sun, is renowned for its front page headlines. Here are my six favourite headlines of the Rupert Murdoch-owned newspaper:
1. “Gotcha” (4 May 1982, after the sinking of the Argentinian cruiser, the General Belgrano, during the Falklands War)
2. “Up Yours Delors” (1 November 1990, after the European Commission President Jacques Delors announced plans for the euro currency)
3. “If Kinnock Wins Today Will The Last Person To Leave Britain Please Turn Out The Lights” (9 April 1992, on the day of the general election which all the polls predicted that the Labour Party led by Neil Kinnock would win)
4. “It’s The Sun Wot Won It” (11 April 1992, after the Conservative Party won the general election)
5. “Maggie Dead In Bed At Ritz” (9 April 2013, after the death of Margaret Thatcher)
6. “Freddie Starr Ate My Hamster” (13 March 1986, after a model claimed that the comedian Freddie Starr ate her pet hamster in a sandwich – see below for my favourite headline)

Have you come across any memorable front page headlines?
Do you read newspapers? If so, what newspapers do you read?
Do you like following the news? If so, where do you get your news from?

I’m an avid reader of newspapers, mainly The Guardian and The Times. I only read the local newspaper for ice hockey news. I also watch a lot of television news programmes, including local television news; I very rarely get my news online.

I read the "Lethbridge Herald" every day. I also watch evening news and late-night news every day! You might say I'm a news fanatic, but I just like to stay informed as to what's happening in the world!

I haven't got the hang of getting my news online yet. I like to read a newspaper on the bus to work.

There was a funny one in Australia a few days ago that I saw on the morning news about a guy who had been seen running around in, I think it was somewhere in the Northern Territory or Western Australia, without clothes on, that said 'Nude Rude Dude in Lewd Mood'... I love it! Even though it sounds kind of prudish.

I generally don't buy newspapers but sometimes if I find a current one on a bus or train I will take it home and read it pretty much cover to cover.

Regrettably I get most of my news off the television but we have a good, free to air news channel, ABC24 that is seemingly quite reliable and unbiased. I occasionally access news off the internet on my phone.
The 'Nude Rude Dude in Lewd Mood' is a classic headline. They could have added shrewd, food and sued to the headline as well.

I always go to the crossword in a newspaper first before reading the news.

I don't think Freddie Starr ate the live hamster. I think she made it all up.

Of course one of the most hilarious things I've ever read is... 'i' before 'e' except if you want to run a feisty heist on a weird, beige, foreign neighbour. I loved that!
That's a great and educational phrase!
