GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN

I’ve just read an interview with Cyndi Lauper. She’s now 60 years old; I felt old! Her 1983 single, Girls Just Want To Have Fun, always made me want to get onto the dance floor to strut my stuff! I didn’t know that she’s since got into blues music; her Memphis Blues album was the bestselling blues album of 2010.

In the interview, Cyndi Lauper told the following joke: “A guy walks into a bar with a frog on his head. The frog says to the barman, ‘How do I get this guy off my ass?’”

That joke brought back memories from school. The party trick of one of my classmates was to stick a straw up a frog’s bottom and blow through the straw until the frog exploded. His trick worked with toads as well. Another one of his party tricks was to spit in his packet of crisps straight after he opened the bag so that no one would want to his crisps – there was method in his madness!

But Cyndi Lauper’s joke also made me think of how I deal with people who I don’t like, who annoy me, or who I think are being very stupid. I try to be tolerant with people, but there’s a limit when I just have to tell them what’s what. I don’t think I’m the most tolerant of people sometimes.

How tolerant are you with people?
How do you get someone you don’t want in your life to get out of your life?
Is it easier to get someone out of your life online or offline?

I have great patience and am very tolerant of others but a certain neighbour of mine...in RL...has pressed too many buttons now and she is going to get to know my inner bitch.

There have only been a few people I have wanted to get out of my life and in RL I just tell them to get lost....here I just ignore them.

I think it is easier in person.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Neighbours can be difficult. I don't see many of my neighbours as I live in a block of flats. But one neighbour has declared himself the representative of everyone living in the block. He chairs a secret committee and he keeps changing the security codes for the bins but never tells anyone. I have problems being pleasant to him, but I do try for the sake of neighbourly harmony!

    Yup - 60. I was shocked too!

I'm very tolerant of most people!
Those I'm not particularly tolerant of - know it, and mostly keep away.
Online is easier but it can hurt when it's you who has been gotten rid of. Mostly online relationships are quite time limited anyway. If they are going anywhere, they become something more than online. When they don't they fizzle out.
Like you, I'm tolerant of most people. People I'm not tolerant with are the intolerant, the mean of spirit and the pompous.

I think it's easier offline; online problems can escalate very quickly and get quite nasty with the anonymity of it all.

I can be incredibly intolerant, if they ever do a "Grumpy old..." series set in Australia, I should definitely get a chair (not a warlord's chair)... The slightest thing can set me off but at other times, I can be surprisingly tolerant, even adding humour to a fucked-up situation.

If someone is in my life and I no-longer want them there, I don't beat around the bush... Telling them straight out is the only way.

It's far easier to disconnect from someone online because they probably don't have your address. Someone who has your address can just come around and make a nuisance of themselves until you snap and give them a serve... Online, you can simply tell them you wish to discontinue the association and if they persist, blocking them can help (at least until they start a new profile as some pests are known to do)... Final resort, ignore repeatedly until they get the message.
I hope you get your chair to be grumpy on television. I would pay for satellite to watch your series. I do like a bit of grumpiness in people.
