CHINA’S CENTURY?
CHINA’S CENTURY? This week the UK government decided to benchmark the grades of school examinations (known as GCSEs) taken by 16 year olds to grades achieved by similar school students in high-performing East Asian countries, including China (and particularly Shanghai which recently came out top of a recent international league table for school performance). Also this week, it was found that there are nearly as many Chinese students as UK students on taught postgraduate courses in the UK. According to the Higher Education Funding Council of England, 23 per cent of students studying for masters-level degree courses are from China, while 26 per cent of students are from the UK. Many people believe that this century will witness the rise of China and the decline of the USA and that this century will be China’s century. Niall Ferguson, a British (or, more accurately, a Scottish) historian, and now the Laurence A Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University, has argued that China will replace the USA as the world’s superpower. Since the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union, China has, so far, successfully embraced capitalism without democracy. China’s economic growth has removed far more Chinese people from poverty than any previous poverty reduction programme pursued by the Chinese government, especially Mao Zedong’s disastrous 1958-1961 Great Leap Forward programme, which condemned millions of peasant workers to death by starvation, never mind the deaths of the Cultural Revolution he launched later in the 1960s. Since the 1990s, we’ve arguably lived under a world governed by an accommodation between the USA and China, known as Chimerica - China saved, exported and lent; and the USA consumed, imported and borrowed. For many, the post-2007 financial crash in the West changed the balance in favour of China. I’m not so sure, China is growing economically but it is still got a long way to go to equal American economic, political and military power. In my University classes, I teach a lot of Chinese students. They are very interesting. They are very respectful of elders (as their Confucian tradition would have it), they are very keen to take ideas back to China (as their government would have it), and they are very critical of the ruling party (as the Communist Party of China wouldn’t have it). Half of all Chinese students studying abroad don’t go back to China once they graduate; they stay in the West to work and send monies to their family. And students from Hong Kong still say they’re from Hong Kong. That says a lot! Do you think this century will be China’s century? Have you visited China? But, and most important, have you ever had sex with someone from the People’s Republic of China? Sorry for the length of this blog, but the issue interests me. I've never had sex with someone from China provided you don't count Hong Kong! |

I really don't think so. Much of their economic growth is smoke and mirrors. example construction growth consists primarily of building many residential tower type complex's that don't serve any purpose, they are wrong locations and at a cost that is out of the reach of the majority of their citizens. The construction is to show many people at work, but the result is hundreds of thousands of empty apartments. Just my thoughts and observations

I've never been to China....and I'm not sure of their role in the coming century. The nearest I ever came to having sex with someone from China was with a Police Officer from Hong Kong....but he was British lol!!! ~~Anais Nin~~

American arrogance will most likely lend itself to the rise of China. I shake my head at our foreign policy. And our education...sorely lacking. Interestingly, MB worked on a project five years ago that had teams from different countries working on different sections of the project. He found the Chinese to be very diligent and the Americans very lazy. there were eight other countries working on the project...he was not impressed with the Greeks.

I'm going to agree with pal334 on this... I think their bubble could burst at any moment and even their investment in the Australian Iron Ore mining industry seems to be starting to shrivel up as the profits begin to shrink. I think their best plan is to focus on micro electronics (small electronic device production). I haven't visited China but I have engaged in sexual activity with a very nice looking Chinese guy, not what I'm usually attracted to but he was one of the best guys I met from this site. He asked me if he could fuck my mouth (one of my favourite things) and after we were finished, he said he had a great time but was not likely to be coming back. I loved his honesty, usually I get lied to with guys saying they will almost certainly be back and then ceasing all contact and changing their profile and phone number. I can't imagine it's just to get away from me. I treat my guests very well.

I've only ever been to Hong Kong which was a very vibrant place to visit, but that was before it was handed back to China.

I try to keep my distance with students nowadays. Student-lecturer relationships are very much frowned upon by university management, and as I get older the students get younger!

I've heard of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. My only doubt whether it will be an Asian century is whether key Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea, Russia and India can cooperate.

No, No and No to the questions! I think China has a very significant role to play in the world but I suspect their political systems will limit their ability to play a full role and abandonment of those very same political systems will allow income to rise at the expense of their worldwide competitiveness. I anticipate a return to smaller autonomous political entities will be the big change over the next century as the global corporations and their governmental lackeys become increasingly seen as corrupt and harmful.
