CHRISTMAS CRACKERS
CHRISTMAS CRACKERS Christmas crackers are popular in the UK, as well as Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and South Africa. Christmas crackers often adorn a Christmas tree or the Christmas dinner table where the Christmas meal will be eaten. When the cracker is pulled by two people, there is a small bang and one person is left with most of the cracker – inside, there is usually a very tacky gift, a paper hat to wear, and a very corny joke written on a small piece of paper. I never wear the hat; it’s embarrassing enough having to wear the obligatory Christmas jumper; I’ve just bought a new one. In the 1840s, London’s Tom Smith invented Christmas crackers. He sold bonbon sweets in a twist of paper. Because sales of his sweets were falling, Tom Jones inserted love messages into the wrappers of his sweets, then added a crackle into the wrappers, and later replaced the bonbons with junk trinkets – by 1847, the Christmas cracker was born. Christmas crackers are often pulled by a chain of people crossing their hands so that each person is pulling two Christmas cracker, one each with the person s/he is sitting next to. The longest Christmas cracker pulling chain is 603 people at RuneFest 3 in London on 2 November 2013. 603 people in a daisy chain would be more fun; they'd be pulling more than crackers! Will you be pulling Christmas crackers over Xmas? Do you wear the Christmas cracker hat and/or a special Christmas jumper at Xmas? Here’s a sample of terrible Christmas cracker jokes: Q: Who is Santa afraid of? A: The Elf and Safety Officer. Q: Why did the turkey cross the road? A: To prove he wasn't chicken. Q: What paper likes music? A: Wrapping paper. Q: What does Santa do with overweight Elves? A: He sends them to an Elf farm. Q: On 24 December, what did Adam say to Eve? A: “It’s Christmas Eve.” |

Our family tradition is Chocolate covered Cherries. I don't remember how it started, but was when we were kids. Is just a cheap brand, but sentimental [image]

Never done the cracker thing....it has never really entered my mind, but now that you mention it, maybe next year!

Those traditions are not something we do here in the States. Maybe I will try it next year.

We have Christmas crackers every year - my sister purchases them at one particular store - and they are KNOWN for the good prizes. This year - a sewing kit, a lipstick case, a all-in-one tool set, a working mini-flashlight (with batteries), a silver necklace on a leather cord. And of course, it is obligatory to wear the silly paper hat. Check out my profile or and become a "watcher" of my blog FMAOPLS,to learn more about me, and for intelligent, lively, smartassy and fun discussion, with a little irreverence thrown in. "Like" or comment on my photos, and I promise I'll add more. Thanks.

Sometimes in the UK, we often don't say sweaters; sometimes we say pullovers to mean jumpers. Another difference between UK-English and American-English!
