OFFICE PARTIES

OFFICE PARTIES  Tomorrow evening is my work’s Xmas party. I am not looking forward to it at all, though everyone has had their arm twisted to go. My workplace is very formal, hierarchical and status-conscious. Hardly anyone knows each other as people; we only know each other as colleagues. I have to be careful what I say, which I often find difficult to do. The last Xmas party I went to with my colleagues involved a lunch - I really should say luncheon because it was that formal. My boss bought four bottles of wine for about 15 people – a glass each! Everyone was wary to go to the bar in case they would be thought of as an alcoholic. After everyone finished their lunch, my boss announced that she was going back to work, which prompted everyone else to go back to work. It was a dreadful Xmas party. At least this year’s Xmas party is in the evening. There is also a disco and even a dress code – dress to impress! But whatever pretence of festive joviality is put on, it is unlikely to overcome the stuffiness of my workplace. Perhaps I will fall ill tomorrow so I can offer my excuses for not going. But maybe the party will be a start in breaking down the formality of my workplace. I don’t know whether to be an optimist or a pessimist; I’ll be a realist instead and just see it as a meal and a chance to strut my stuff to Abba’s Dancing Queen and Chic’s Le Freak. There is no chance of anything untoward happening. If someone kissed someone else at work, both would have to confess to my boss that they kissed because there is a code of conduct governing sexual and romantic relationships at the workplace. It’s the most no-fun place I’ve ever worked at! Do you enjoy, or did you enjoy, any parties with your work colleagues? Have you ever stolen a kiss or even had sex at a work’s party? Have you ever had sex with your boss? |

We used to have parties for co-workers, but put on by the workers..the boss or corporation never did. Never had a bonus in 37 1/2 years. Some workers are sociable..others are "stuffy"! We used to go to parties put on by wife's boss's, but they are becoming hum-drum... Never went last year or this year. Never had sex at the party, but did go out to the vehicle and have sex while van was warming up! I've never had or plan to have sex with a man! (my bosses were always men)

I would attend the first hour or so of the Christmas party in the military, I would help sponsor the parties, but found as a Senior person it cramped the troops style less if I made a gracious exit .

I learned my lesson early about office romance.  Dated a few coworkers. Great for a while. Sharing rides to work, etc..  But breakups were nasty and made work very uncomfortable. Usually I'd end up quitting.

Yes, yes, and yes. I mostly enjoy the office parties cos I mostly work in industries that are usually more informal. Certainly not like the one you describe. Although I have had a few boring, poke-my-own-eye-out ones. If it makes it easier, why not just not go? Ha..easier said than done, I know. Coming back to this - as a result of my getting-it-on with colleagues, I've had to leave two of my previous jobs, and one rather unceremoniously. I have also had sex with my boss. It started years ago and I have since left that job, but we still have an ongoing relationship. I guess we are, for the lack of a better term, friends with benefits. I guess, like everything else, there are positives and negatives with fucking around in the office. To be able to reap the positives, you should be prepared to deal with the negatives

I've always enjoyed work parties, cause my friends and I tend ot go out afterwards.

I'm not sure whose idea it was for the setting. I chickened out in the end and stayed at home instead. By all accounts, I didn't miss much!

I could handle an office party in a luxury hotel with good food etc, but this was in a conference centre!

..those type of parties sort of ended ..when political correctness invaded our world...but yes... we were drunk ..she slid out of her dress..and the rest is a great memory,... blue...

We always had work parties twice a year. I would flirt and kiss, but would draw the line at sex. As a senior colleague I know the problems in the workplace that would cause. warm xx
