SANTA’S PUB CRAWL
SANTA’S PUB CRAWL SantaCon is an annual event, held on 14 December, when people dressed in Santa Claus (and other Xmas-related) costumes embark on a bar crawl, sometimes to raise money for charity. The first SantaCon was held in San Francisco in 1994, though it has spread to many other American cities and many cities outside America, including Hong Kong, London and Moscow. Though increasingly popular, SantaCon events, particularly in New York, have attracted increased criticism because of the drunken and sometimes violent behaviour. Recently, The New York Times described the SantaCon event as “a daylong bar crawl that begins with good cheer and, for many, inevitably ends in a blurry, booze-soaked haze.” The Gothamist’s John Del Signore wrote that “this annual drunken shitshow has steadily devolved from cleverly subversive to barely tolerable to ‘time to lock yourself in your apartment for the day’.” In the UK, we tend to say pub crawl than bar crawl – we still have more pubs than bars. I’ve never participated in a SantaCon event but I have embarked on many pub crawls, especially for stag parties. The end result was always the same, a late-night curry followed by a massive morning-after hangover! Where I used to live in Portsmouth, The Wine Vaults pub had six bars; my favourite pub crawls were always spent doing a bar crawl in the pub. I used to get served quickly as the pub sponsored my football team; the team were allowed one free beer if we won our game. We always told the pub that we had never lost a game, still a Guinness World Record! Have you participated in a SantaCon event? When was your last bar crawl or pub crawl? What’s the difference between a pub (public house) and a bar? |

OMG!!!! That brings back some headaches. As a young fellow in the military I did do more bar crawls than I should have. Never did a Christmas one though. Sexy Sunday Shaving, yes or no

Never done a SantaCon, not sure we have any desire to... a mass of people all heavily under the influence for a long period of time - only one outcome - messy! Both of us have done pub / bar crawls in London, 16 years ago when we met. We feel kind of to old for it now! There's lots of difference between pubs and bars in the uk, but for us the main difference is that the whole place doesn't go quiet and everyone stares at you if you are a stranger walking into a bar!

Being a Brit I've pub crawled in my mis-spent youth. A pub in the UK is short for a public house and in effect is a local social meeting place, usually where there are regular visitors, or regulars. A bar is anywhere, e.g. a hotel, that serves drinks. The landlord/landlady of a pub usually lives on the premises. I much prefer pubs to bars. warm xx

Thanks for your comment. I guess the Barmy Army are a very unhappy lot at the moment.

I've not heard of SantaCon in my city, though it is a place where many stag and hen parties take place throughout the year.
