STORY OF O

Anne Desclos, under the pen name Pauline Réage, wrote the 1954 erotic novel Histoire d'O for her lover and admirer of Marquis de Sade, Jean Paulhan.

“Every minute of every day, I saw everyone naked”, so said a woman who suffers from pure O, which is the extreme end of the obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is sometimes called the ‘doubting disease’. When this woman sat her school exams, she admitted that “every second stroke of my pen marked the flicker of some forbidden obscenity in my brain”. Her thoughts were always “X-rated”. Pure O involves repetitive distressing thoughts, extreme anxiety and constant thinking about thoughts. In this case, she was obsessed about sex; she even described her boyfriend’s face as a “vaginal face”. She mentally undressed all her friends and anyone else she saw.

It’s estimated that one per cent of the world’s population have O, an obsession. The World Health Organisation lists O as one of the ten most debilitating conditions in terms of quality of life. Why would Calvin Klein market a perfume called Obsession?

Have you read the Story of O book?
How often do you think about sex?
How much do you filter your thoughts about sex when talking to people?
Do you mentally undress people?

I regularly mentally undress people. Also a couple of times a week, I have to go back to check that I’ve locked the door to my office or my home. It’s much easier to go back and check that the door is locked than not go back and have the thought of an unlocked door churn in my head, even though I know that I’ve locked up.

No.

Every day.

Depends on the person and the context. I have good self-control!

Sometimes. Not as much fun as physically undressing them - the certainly depends on the person and context!

warm xx

I find mentally undressing sometimes better than physically undressing. I'm quite impatient sometimes to get clothes off!

I've not watched the film nor read the book. Perhaps I'll get the DVD or book as a Xmas present!

I've not read The Story of O book. I'd be interested to know why it made you feel ill when reading the book.

Thanks for your elaboration. If it's an abusive relationship, then I won't be reading the book.
