TANTRIC SEX


I have heard but know very little about tantric sex. My understanding, and probably a misunderstanding, is that it is sex that embraces spirituality but the sex stops short of an orgasm. If tantric sex is sex without cum, it seems a wasted effort; but if tantric sex is foreplay, then, it sounds fun.

What little I know about tantric sex comes from a Q magazine interview with Sting in the early 1990s, who boasted that he had tantric sex with his now wife, Trudie Styler, for six hours. Sting now claims he was drunk when he was interviewed and Trudie Styler has since confirmed his boast was not true.

Tantra is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘woven together’. The practice of tantra started towards the end of the eighteenth century in Persia (now Iran); it was in the West that sex was added to tantra. Tantric sex, or neo-tantra, is the Western version of tantra involving the weaving together of two people in spiritual and non-orgasmic sexual union. Many Buddhist and Hindi spiritual teachers are critical of tantric sex for sex being added to the spiritual tantra.

In China, tantric sex classes don’t go down well with the authorities. In 2012, a tantric sex centre in the Guangdong province was closed down because the Chinese police believed the tantric sex instructors were brainwashing its class members into having promiscuous sex – above is a photo of one such tantric sex class. The photo looks more like people dancing to The Gap Band's song, Oops Upside Your Head.
