AGE OF CONSENT Below are James Mason and Helen Mirren starring in the 1969 Australian film, Age of Consent.  Earlier today, the President of the Faculty of Public Health, Professor John Ashton, called for the lowering of the age of consent from 16 to 15 years old in the UK. Professor Ashton argued that, as a third of teenagers have sex before they reach 16, lowering the age of consent will allow them to seek contraception and sexual health advice from the NHS. He added that teenagers are increasingly exposed to pornography, which is creating “strange expectations” of relationships. He said, "We need a debate here.” Later today and amidst outraged headlines in right-wing newspapers, David Cameron the Prime Minister rejected the need for a debate. He said the current legislation protects and there are "no plans to change it". The debate has now effectively ended after only a few hours! In the UK, the age of consent is 16 years of age for heterosexual and homosexual sex. The age of consent for heterosexual sex varies widely across the world. In the US, the age of consent varies from 16 to 18 years of age between states. In Australia, it ranges from 16 to 17 years of age across states. And in Mexico, it varies from 12 to 18 years of age between states. Below are the age of consent for other selected countries: 12 years of age - Angola 13 years of age - Japan, Spain 14 years of age - Austria, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Portugal, Serbia 15 years of age - Denmark, France, Greece, Poland, Sweden, Thailand 16 years of age - Belgium, Canada, Jamaica, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Russia, South Africa 17 years of age - Ireland 18 years of age - Argentina, Egypt, Gambia, India, Iraq, Malta, Turkey In some Islamic countries – such as Iran, Pakistan and Qatar – sex is illegal outside marriage. Though sex outside marriage is illegal in Saudi Arabia, there is no restriction on the age of marriage; in 2008 a Saudi court refused to annul a marriage between an 8-year-old girl and a 58-year-old man! Only a few months ago, Pope Francis raised the age of consent for sex from 12 to 18 years of age in the Vatican City! What age do you think should be the age of consent for sex? I say 18. The fact that there is allegedly seem more of a parental issue than a government issue. I know, I did not follow this age 18 idea when I was that age. Maybe is just a changed opinion based on my age. The government should stay out of folks private lives and leave these responsibilities to the family Sexy sleepwear,,His and hers

I think this should be looked at differently... There is a difference of teenagers having sex...than adults having sex with teenagers... maybe if you are an adult...the legal age of having sex with a teenager should be 18....and the legal age of an adult should be 18.... you are never going to stop teenagers having sex..they are already 13 going on 40... do you remember the age you first had sex.........15 Blue

I remember that in the interior sleeve notes of the 1984 Bronski Beat album 'The Age of Consent' where the age of consent for Hungary was listed as ten... I was disgusted and horrified as a 19 year old. It just seemed way too young. I think the Age of Consent should universally be 16 but only with partners 25 years of age or under and sexual orientation should not be a factor when determining an appropriate age of consent. People over the age of 18 should be free to have sex with anyone else over the age of 18. Just my nsho

Like you, I think there is a danger criminalising teenagers having sex with each other and cannot see how it would help things.

Effing Affairlook filter didn't put on my post for saying the R A P E word. So ridiculous! Here in Florida, the age of consent is 18, with exceptions against prosecution for statutory *ape if the parties are close in age (for example, a 23 year old could legally have sex with a 17 year old). I believe that the law is appropriate. The "age of consent" is essentially the age at which a "child" can lawfully have sex with an "adult." By lowering the age of consent to 15, the government giving permission to a 40 year old man to seduce a 15 year old child. This is NOT an accommodation of sex which already occurs between teenagers, unless the law was in response to pervasive prosecution of sexually active teenagers (which you say it is not). The justifications you describe would NEVER fly in "most states" the US (some Southern states are still backwards). In the US, Professor Ashton would have been fired in less time than the Prime Minister took to end the debate. In the US, most people feel that parents should be involved in the teenagers' doctor/gynecological decisions, access to contraception, AND access to abortions -- NOT the government. My daughter will soon be 16 and I would be HORRIFIED - and would probably beat to death - any grown adult man who had sex with her. It's a VERY good thing we don't live in the UK!

well, the teenagers can have sex with each other...the age of consent is about having sex with adults....thus, at age 17 they can be allowed to choose to have sex with an older adult.
