He specialised in portraits of famous artists and writers and in illustrations of an erotic and libertine nature. A libertine is a hedonist, someone who is amoral in the pursuit of pleasure. The term libertine was coined by John Calvin, a French pastor, who was a leading figure in the sixteenth century Reformation when the Protestant Church split from the Roman Catholic Church; his Christian theology is now known as Calvinism - he called his opponents libertines! Amoral doesn’t mean immoral as being immoral requires an accepted moral standard to breach. Amoral people have no such moral standards, except for other other people's standards, to breach. Swingers in France are often called libertines. What would you do if you were this soldier on guard duty and sex was offered to you? Are you a libertine or a hedonist? |
