"THE BOWLER'S HOLDING, THE BATSMAN'S WILLEY"

Above is a photo of a streaker halting play during a cricket game played at Lord’s cricket ground in London. Cricket is a popular game in many countries, especially in India where Sachin Tendulkar, arguably the world’s best ever batsman, is playing his last cricket match.

Cricket is a game with a lot of rules, including the rule that cricketers must abide by the “spirit of the game” that is generally meant that cricketers should play in a sporting manner. In the nineteenth century, the phrase, ‘It’s not cricket’, was coined to describe unsporting behaviour.

Brian Johnson, often called Johnners, was a very popular cricket commentator on BBC radio and television. During one cricket match, he once complained that he had missed out on some cake during tea; his remark started a tradition of people regularly sending him cakes to eat while he commentated on cricket matches. He often collapsed into laughter during his commentary. Once, a fellow commentator claimed Ian Botham was out because he failed to “get his leg over”, a slang term for having sex; Johnson tried to carry on commentating before laughing uncontrollably while on air. In his commentary, Brian Johnston would often use tongue-in-cheek comments, including these four classics:

1. “Ray Illingworth has just relieved himself at the pavilion end."
2. "Welcome to Worcester where you've just missed seeing Barry Richards hitting one of Basil D'Oliveira's balls clean out of the ground."
3. "There's Neil Harvey standing at leg slip with his legs wide apart, waiting for a tickle.”
4. "The bowler's Holding, the batsman's Willey.”

Michael Holding was a West Indian fast bowler and Peter Willey was an English batsman. I’m not a big fan of cricket as the games can take up to five days to complete and still end up as a draw!

Do you enjoy cricket?
What sports do you enjoy playing or watching?
Have you ever streaked in public?

I have never really watched cricket!
I like baseball, hockey, darts but I watch several sports. I am an avid Olympic watcher, both summer and winter!

Cricket sounds more boring than baseball. No wonder they need streakers and innuendo talking announcers to keep it interesting! At least baseball can't end in a tie.

I mostly just watch American Football. (College and Professional) Although other sports are fascinating and quite athletic. ... I'll also watch the Olympics.

Never streaked.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

1. LOVE it, best game in the land, a true game of chess.
2. Cricket to watch, curling to play.
3. Nope.

Johnners was also a lovely man, as well as one of the best comedians of his day! The giggles on those commentaries are absolutely infectious. And the TMS commentary nowadays is absolutely sensational. These guys are intelligent, know their sport and its players and indulge in a good old laugh as they go along. As with everything in life, a little mirth makes it all so much more enjoyable!

I'm not very entertained by watching cricket but don't mind playing...

I enjoy tennis, touch football, basketball/netball, billiards and running.

I haven't streaked in public but with the right encouragement (and if post-operative), wouldn't rule it out
I used to play a lot of tennis, as well as table tennis where I was a demon at the table!

My main sports are football and ice hockey. I haven't played darts for a while - it used to be played in most pubs in the UK, but pubs have changed and dartboards have gradually disappeared.

Cricket can be very time-consuming to watch. But they have developed a short game version called 20/20 cricket. These games last only an evening.

The position of the pole is very suggestive. A cricket wicket consists of three poles, so she is in danger of treble penetration!

Quite of a few of my friends enjoy cricket, but I've never spent much time studying the game to fully appreciate it. I do like hearing about the sledging episodes though!

I used to play lots of tennis; it's a harder game to play than it looks on television.

I've only ever played golf once and was terrible, though I do enjoy a bit of crazy golf!

My Dad was a "dart master" while alive. He played and won many trophy's playing at the Legion and ANAF(Army-Navy- AirForce) clubs. It is true, darts were mainly in bars, and disappearing. I have my Dad's dart board he had set up at home, along with all his darts.
