A HISTORY OF THE CONDOM

Historians cannot agree when condoms were first used; they argue over whether they were first used in ancient Greek, Egyptian or Roman times. In fifteenth-century Asia, there is some evidence that condoms - made of oiled silk paper, lamb intestines, tortoise shell or animal horn - were used.

Gabriele Falloppio's sixteenth-century treatise on syphilis, De Morbo Gallico, describes the first documented use of condoms, which were dried linen sheaths soaked in a chemical solution. In the 1605 publication, De Justitia et Jure, Leonardus Lessius acknowledged and condemned the use of condoms for birth control purposes. According to Aine Collier’s 2007 book, The Humble Little Condom: A History, the first documented use of the word 'condom' was in 1666 by the English Birth Rate Commission who attributed a recent downward fertility rate to use of "condons".

Why are condoms called condoms?
What words did you use for condoms?
What words do you use for a condom now?

I used to call them rubber johnnies and Durex, but now I say condoms.

1. No idea, I always thought it sounded french?
2. Johnnies, rubbers.
3. Condoms.

They're absolutely essential these days, but completely desensitise, I find.

I've come across the term socks but not safes. I've added a new term to my lexicon!

They are desensitising. Sometimes the act of putting a condom on ruins the moment, but needs must!

Rubbers are what we used to call condoms at school, not that we had any need for them. We just giggled at the innuendo!

    many slang names but...

    Denmark - Gummimand, for "Rubberman,"

Hungary - Ovsver, for "Safety Tool,"

Hong King - Pei Dang Vi, for "Bulletproof Vest,"

Portugal - Camisa De Venus, for "Venus Shirt,"

Nigeria - Okpuamu, for "Penis Hat,"

Indonesia - Koteca, for "Penis Gourd," and

    Spain - globo, for "Balloon."

...back east I new then as "Coney Island Whitefish"...
I like the term Coney Island Whitefish for a used condom. It's now entered my vocabulary.
