WAR AND PEACE AGAIN

In the UK and many other countries, today is Remembrance Sunday and tomorrow is Remembrance Day; both days are marked by people remembering the fallen in times of war. Remembrance Day, also known as Armistice Day, falls on 11 November – at the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month in the year 1918, hostilities ended on the Western Front during the First World War. More than 9 million combatants were killed during this war; it remains the fifth deadliest conflict in history.

Remembrance Day is popularly known as Poppy Day, as many people wear red poppies to honour the dead. Red poppies were widely seen in the fields of the Western Front and they now symbolise the blood spilt in what was possibly a pointless war. One Canadian soldier, Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, penned the war poem In Flanders Fields:
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Though I don’t agree with some of the wars waged in our name, I recognise the sacrifices made and I always remember those who suffered in times of war, including military and civilian personnel and also the so-called enemy. I’m struck, particularly during the First World War, how fighting soldiers had more in common with each other than they had with their military and political leaders. Above is a photograph of a German (Hun) soldier giving a cigarette to a captured and wounded British (Tommy) soldier. There's humanity in the photograph.

Sometimes I wish politicians would do more to prevent war. Perhaps politicians should have a boxing fight to sort out their differences – Reagan vs Gorbachev, Thatcher vs Galtieri and Bush vs bin Laden would be prime-time boxing contests. And these boxing fights would cause less suffering than waging war. Or, perhaps I'm a dreamer!

Do you commemorate Remembrance Day?
Do you believe in a just war?
Do you enjoy boxing?

Let us not forget who have served our countries, fought and died for them on this very special day. Here in Canada it is called Remembrance Day as well. Not really into boxing hugs V

A SOLDIER'S PRAYER

Dear Lord
Please let me have regular dreams like others do
Not these nightmares of memory
Let my dreams be filled with light and joy
Not smoke and terror
Let me hear the laughter of children
Not the screams of men dying
Let the birds fill the air with song
Not the sounds of bombs and bullets
Let the rivers run pure and clear
Not red with blood
Let everyone be healthy and whole
Not missing limbs and faces
Let the earth look as you made it
Not scorched and cratered
Let me wake up smiling
Not searching for the enemy
Let the sweat on my pillow be from summer's heat
Not the sweat of fear and anxiety
but dear Lord most of all
I beg you
Please don't let my children or their children
pray to you as I am doing tonight
Amen

Having served in many conflicts (call them wars, conflicts whatever) during my 30 years service I can without a doubt say that they were all politically motivated and to me at least wasted many young lives. Having said that, I am proud of my peoples service, sacrifices and commitment . I would do it all over again in a heart beat though,, the old saying is "Service before self"

I am the grand-daughter of Jewish immigrants who fled Europe during WWII. Not all my family made it out. My three Great-Aunts (Sylvia, Bert and Effie) were held at Bergen-Belsen for two years. The British liberated the camp and my aunts. I have heard the story of that day many times before they died of very old age. (Sylvia lived to 101)
I will celebrate Veterans Day and call my Father (he served 30 years in the U.S Navy). Tomorrow is important for so many reasons.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

Yes, I commemorate Remembrance Day..My father was in the Air Force in WWll.
I would rather not see war, but some were just! If I was younger, I would serve!
I do not care for boxing.

1. Yes, but not formally.
2. Some wars yes, but too many are motivated for petty political gains.
3. Not really.

I agree, but politicians often tell us the lies we want to hear.

Wars have to be about politics, it's the only way we can have some say!

The Desperate Cries of Women and Children
The Rapid Bursts of Machine Gun Fire
The Deafening Roar of a Tsunami
Most People Hear the Sounds of Chaos
And Run in the Opposite Direction
    But There Are A Few
Who Listen Intently For These Sounds
Not in the Hopes of Hearing Them
But to Help Rid the World of Them.
    They are the Few
Forged in the Crucible of Training
    To Respond Quickly and Decisively
In the Midst of Chaos and Uncertainty.
    And When the Time Comes
They are the First to Move
    Toward the Sounds of
    Tyranny
    Injustice
    And Despair.
They are the First to Move
    Toward the Sounds of Chaos

Because the Only Things Louder Than the Sounds of Chaos
Are the Sounds of the Few Moving Toward Them.

    ...rest in peace ...my brothers...
That's a powerful war poem!

Your family history is one big reason why America and Europe should stand together.

I agree with you big time, war should be avoided but there are just wars, WWII was one just war.

Totally agree, politicians should think long and hard before committing to war!
