WALK ON THE WILD SIDE

I woke up this morning to hear that Lou Reed, aged 71, died yesterday from liver disease; he had a liver transplant earlier this year.

Until 1970, Lou Reed was part of Velvet Underground, along with John Cale. Velvet Underground caught the attention of the artist Andy Warhol, who wanted the band to take on a chanteuse, Nico. Though she did perform with the band, Velvet Underground did not regard Nico as part of the band, which is why their 1967 debut album was titled The Velvet Underground & Nico. Lou Reed and later John Cale were lovers of Nico. On hearing Lou Reed’s music for the first time, David Bowie said, "I had never heard anything quite like it. It was a revelation to me", He went on to co-produce Lou Reed’s best album, Transformer, released in 1972.

I love the music of Lou Reed; it is widely enjoyed by people with very different musical tastes. My favourite Lou Reed song is the 1972 song, Walk On The Wild Side. I wanted this song to be played at my wedding but my mother-in-law-to-be vetoed the idea after hearing the lyrics:

Holly came from Miami, FLA
Hitch-hiked her way across the USA
Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her legs and then he was a she
She says, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"
He said, "Hey honey, take a walk on the wild side"

Candy came from out on the island
In the backroom she was everybody's darlin'
But she never lost her head
Even when she was giving head
She says, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"
He said, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"

And the colored girls go
Doo do doo, doo do doo, doo do doo

Little Joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay
A hustle here and a hustle there
New York City's the place where they said
"Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey Joe, take a walk on the wild side"

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin' for soul food and a place to eat
Went to the Apollo, you should've seen 'em go go go
They said, "Hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"
Alright, huh

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was James Dean for a day
Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that bash
She said, "Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side"
I said, "Hey honey, take a walk on the wild side"

And the colored girls say
Doo do doo, doo do doo, doo do doo

The song was a tribute to the friends, hangers-on and misfits that were part of Andy Warhol’s scene in New York. But the song always reminds me of my wedding even though it was never played in the church.

Another song that makes me reminisce is Gerry Rafferty’s Baker Street. In 1978 I started seeing my first girlfriend and this single was the first present I gave her. She then died from a -riding accident. Because the relationship was new – we only kissed - and I was at boarding school, my parents did not know I had a girlfriend. When I phoned my Mum, I had to announce that I had but haven’t got a girlfriend; it was a strange phone call!

Do you like Lou Reed’s music?
If so, what’s your favourite Lou Reed song?
Are there any songs that remind you of your past?

I have NEVER listened to (or read) the lyrics to that song before. It was so catchy, I didn't need to know them.

Sad, when a groundbreaking artist passes away, too soon.

It's very sad news, the death of Lou Lou, as he was apparently affectionately known to his most intimate friends.
My favourite song by him is actually Take A Walk On The Wild Side, more for its iconic status than the meaning in its lyrics... It appears in the 1980 b-grade movie Times Square starring Robyn Johnson and Trini Alvarado and the movie also has a great song Pissing In The River by Patti Smith (of Because The Night fame, which was written by Bruce Springsteen).

Pity your mother in law to be vetoed your song choice for your wedding, that could have been so cool.

There are so many songs that remind me of my past that there's no way I could bore you by listing them all but I do also like Baker Street by Gerry Rafferty. I feel sad that you lost that girlfriend in such tragic circumstances.
I love Patti Smith too. I would be interested to know of your special songs.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light was good:

Ain't no doubt about it
We were doubly blessed
'Cause we were barely seventeen
And we were barely dressed

Lou Reed did a lot of rubbish songs as well, or at best they can be seen as experimental.

The lyrics sound even better on the song - there are some fantastic vocals.

I once played my favourite songs to a teenager and she just gave me a certain look and walked off!
Are you enjoying the songs your daughter likes?

...I was a fan of the Velvet underground's music...and Lou will be missed....

    Standing on the corner
    Suitcase is in my hand
Jack is in his corset, and Jane is in her vest
    I'm in a rock 'n' roll band

Ridin' in a Stutz bear cat, Jim
    Those were different times
The poets they studied rules of verse
And those ladies rolled their eyes

    You know you sweet Jane
    Oh now baby, sweet Jane
    Oh yes sweet Jane

The Velvet Underground's Sweet Jane is another classic song.

My special songs include '1999' by Prince... 'I love Rock 'n' Roll' as well as 'Cherry Bomb' by Joan Jett (in fact pretty much any Joan Jett song)... 'People Are People' and/or 'Blasphemous Rumours' by Depeche Mode... 'Unfinished Sympathy' by Massive Attack... 'Screaming' as well as 'Why' from The Age Of Consent album by Bronski Beat... 'All We Are' by Warlock... 'Radio Clash' and 'Rock The Casbah' by the Clash... 'Flesh For Fantasy' by Billy Idol... And just about the entire Iron Maiden 'Live After Death' album which I have on vinyl and is one of my most treasured possessions
Joan Jett, now you're talking!
Massive Attack were brilliant. At the time of Massive Attack, there was a Bristol scene of bands - Morcheeba, Tricky and Portishead - who were all good.

Such a sad loss for music lovers. I don't think I disliked any of his music.
Baker Street is one of my very favorite reminisce songs. Year of the Cat is another.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I've not come across the music of Al Stewart - I had to look him up after your post! I'm going to give that a song a listen now. Thanks.
