BIRCHED IN A SAUNA?  A sauna is a small room or cabin where people sweat – sorry, relax - in hot and humid temperatures. Saunas were traditional Finnish baths and bathhouses, first used in possibly as far back as the fifth century. Saunas soon spread across the Baltic countries, Scandinavia, Russia and the rest of the world. In Finland, people sometimes use a bundle of birch twigs with leaves (called a vihta or vasta) to slap their skin to further stimulate blood circulation. It is customary for families to go naked in a sauna and to end with a dip in a cold lake or a roll in the snow. Saunas are home to an elf called the saunatonttu; people sometimes warm up their sauna and leave food for the elves. There are more saunas than private cars in Finland. The heat of the sauna comes from a stove and the humidity is created by splashing water onto the heated rocks to create steam (called löyly). Throwing water onto the rocks, though reducing the heat from the stove, increases the air temperature and hots up the sauna. Relief from the heat comes from sitting higher up in the sauna or, if unbearable, quickly getting out of the sauna. In a macho display while in a Moroccan sauna, I threw far too much water onto the rocks to impress my then girlfriend, a sauna virgin. It soon became insufferable; I refused to open the door of the sauna – we lay on the floor for the whole session to be close to a cool draught coming from a narrow gap between the floor and door. In 1999, the first World Sauna Championships were held; the winner was the person who lasted longest in a hot sauna. These annual championships were cancelled after a contestant died in 2010. Earlier this month, six of Edinburgh’s 13 licensed saunas were closed down by the City of Edinburgh Council after reviewing evidence that sex was being sold in the sauna establishments. The NHS supplies 130,000 free condoms, but strangely no birch twigs, to Edinburgh's licensed saunas every year. Reassuringly, the UK is contributing to the fine sauna traditions of the world! I've never been in a sauna, but I have been in a sweat lodge. They sound very similar. The heat in a sweat lodge is provided by rocks heated in a fire. Water, tobacco and other herbs are poured on rocks in a ritualistic fashion. I made it to "round three" by sucking on the dusty air on ground. .. I was in a desert, so there was no snow or cold lake to jump into.

Saunas do involve a lot of sweating; I con myself that it's good for me!

I've always skipped the cold water after a sauna. I've just suffered enough in the sauna without any more suffering!

Being in Sweden saunas are very common and widely used. We have been in a sauna and then rolled in the snow outside, that was exhilarating. We have also had sex in numerous saunas and even had a threesome in one, that was hot!

I'm not a huge fan of saunas myself. I would never even consider having sex in one ... I find it hard enough to breathe inside the things when I am sitting still.

Yeah, almost born in sauna  Well... in fact the worldchampionships were held in the town I was born Looks like some have been in bad sauna: it should NEVER be too hot and dry!!! Nice mild and humid, easy to breathe and so forth. And yeah, have had sex in sauna too.. but not too often... Mentally a small problem as going there to relax. Not to sexercise...
