TWERKING

Today, I came across the word twerking for the first time. I have not come across the word before; clearly I must try harder to stay in tune with youth culture!

Twerking, according to the online OxfordDictionaries, is to “dance to popular music in a sexually provocative manner involving thrusting hip movements and a low, squatting stance”.

Twerking entered popular culture with the rise of hip-hop culture during the 1990s in the United States. On her 2005 Check On It single, Beyonce sings, "Dip it, pop it, twerk it, stop it, check on me tonight." On his 2006 Sexy Back single by Justin Timberlake ft Timbaland - hope you noticed my nod to youth culture, the chorus goes, "VIP, drinks on me, let me see what you're twerking with." In August 2013, the American rapper Juicy J tweeted that he would give a $50,000 scholarship for the girl who can best twerk. Earlier this year, 33 students from Scripps Ranch High School in San Diego were suspended for making a twerking video while at school and uploading it onto YouTube.

Though the word has been in popular usage for two decades, OxfordDictionaries only added the word to its dictionary after Miley Cyrus’s twerking performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in August this year. After her widely reported performance, Miley Cyrus said she “wanted to make history”. People may scoff at her claim, but there is clear photographic evidence that she twerked with Martin Luther King on 28 August 1963. She did make history!

I wish twerking was around when I was young; the only dances I did was pogo-ing to punk music while sniffing a Vicks inhaler in the 1970s and looking miserable to new wave music while dressed in a long dark coat in the 1980s. I was deprived of twerking.

When did you come across the word twerking?
Have you indulged in a bit of twerking?
What dances did you do when you were in your teens and twenties?

I danced the "jive" to good old rock & roll! (still do)
We did some disco!
Don't dance much any more but I like the "two step", polka, old time waltz.
I think anyone who dances, does some twerking!

I think I first heard about "twerking" a few months before Miley Cyrus's famous performance. Perhaps on my favorite 'toob' channel "Equals Three" where he reviewed a cat video where the cat was twerking to a hip hop tune from 1999.

I don't twerk. lol

I mostly freestyle danced. I'm sure it wasn't pretty. But it was fun. There aren't many dance clubs anymore. I did some of that stupid line dancing too, but thank God all of the country music clubs have closed.

Is head-banging considered dancing? I did lots of that!

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

I like how Furbal puts it.... freestyle! That was me. And the white girl shuffle step together repeat dance. I was more into the sit down and listen kind of trippy music... never heard of twerking until the VMAs.

Since I'm in a dance company where I'm supposed to be able to dance ALL styles ( which I can't ) I theoretically should be an expert on "twerking". But I swear I've only known the word for about a month now.

I'm going to have to now yootoob it for a crash course.

1. About a year ago!
2. Aye, but I knocked someone out!
3. I used to do a weird shuffle thing with my feet, sticking them out and sliding them back, in time to some shite disco tune!

But now, there's only la salsa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree with you, dancing always involves some twerking.

If I'm counting pogo-ing as dancing, you can certainly count head-banging!

Freestyle dancing, is that the same as punk dancing?

Because the music of Beyonce, Timberlake et al doesn't generally appeal to me and Miley Cyrus is more of a what than a who, "twerking" is a term I have rarely encountered and until your post have not learned the meaning of. Thank you for the education, Spunky.

I have never "twerked" and I never stick my backside out when dancing. It seems like a universal and unarticulated invitation to fuck it.

I remember doing the bump in the 70s and horrible old-style catillion style dances teachers made us do at school (square dances and sad shit like that), a bit of "breaking" in the 80s (during my late teens), freestyling in the 90s, virtually nothing in the naughties and in recent years but I have been a fairly dedicated headbanger since about 1983

    I prefer to sing.
Another head-banger! My punk days were dedicated to get rid of head-banging music. Punk obviously failed!

That's very reassuring; I'm not alone that twerking passed me by.

I liked the photo, not least as a manipulated photo it seems to fit well together.

I look forward to your twerking video, but please post the clip as a blog post first.

Your finger is on the pulse. Disco was never shite, just occasionally less good.
Salsa, twerking ... what's the difference?
