INFATUATION
INFATUATION Above is David Hockney’s 1961 painting, We Two Boys Together Clinging. This picture was painted when he was infatuated with Cliff Richard, well before Cliff’s Sue Barker days. Here is my roll call of infatuations: Janet Helen Alice Cooper Julie Audrey Hepburn David Owen Janet and Helen were in my class at primary school. When Janet moved schools, I penned a letter begging her not to move school but my Mum wisely persuaded me not to send the letter. Alice Cooper was my first teenage infatuation. Julie was at a girls’ high school while I was at an all boys grammar school; she was also the of the school dinner lady. The closest we got was when she fell over and landed in my lap at a village hall disco. Audrey Hepburn has been a constant after spending many Sunday afternoons watching her films. David Owen was a politician; he defected from the Labour Party to set up the SDP that gradually morphed into the Liberal Democrats. I even invited him to my wedding; he replied on House of Commons notepaper to say he couldn’t come. I cannot rationally explain any of these infatuations, which is why they were infatuations. Please note, I've not had infatuations since the 1980s when I was in my twenties. While on this site, I can understand more how infatuation can develop online. The virtual reality, the distance, and the ease in which one can imagine all seem ripe for infatuation. Online is different to offline; both easier and harder but different. Who were your teenage crushes? Who have you been infatuated with? When was your last infatuation? Have you had an online infatuation? Did Cliff and Sue do it? |

My infatuation with David Owen, the politician, was far from rational. I was old enough to know better!

I can fully understand David Cassidy and David Essex - the hearthrobs of the 1970s!

It's nice to get infatuated once in a while, don't you think?
