POPPERS  Poppers is a slang term for amyl nitrite, which is used medically to treat heart disease and cyanide poisoning. Poppers are cap vials of amyl nitrite used for non-medical purposes. When inhaled, poppers quickly cause a sudden surge of blood to the brain and heart, and induce a euphoric/aphrodisiac state, widely known as a headrush. Poppers often create a heightened sensual awareness; they are often used for sex. Poppers also lead to a relaxation of involuntary muscles such as those found in the anal sphincter; they are often used for anal sex. A 1988 survey found that nearly 70 per cent of gay men in Baltimore/Washington DC area used poppers. Other effects of poppers when inhaled are decreased blood pressure, headaches, flushing of the face, increased heart rate, light-headedness and dizziness. As recreational drugs go, poppers are relatively safe and mainly legal, though poppers can be fatal if combined with Viagra. Poppers have been popular since the 1970s in clubs (and in bedrooms). In my youth, I inhaled poppers a few times, but they also gave me a splitting headache after a brief headrush. The rush never outweighed the ache, so I soon stopped popping.
