HOLIER VESTS ARE SCARY

There are many words in the English language that remain a word after removing a letter one by one. Here's an example - the word, binds:
BINDS – remove S
BIND - remove D
BIN - remove B
IN - remove N
I

There are two nine-letter words in the English language that are still a word when eight letters are removed one by one. The title of this post and the photo above are clues to the two words.

What’s the longest-letter word you can think of that is still a word after stripping it letter by letter?
Do you like birds?
What is your favourite bird?

There will be a prize for the person who can think of the longest word that is still a word after removing a letter one by one. Cheating on the internet will be severely punished!

Some birds I like....some birds I don't like!
I'm Canadian but my favorite bird is the amazing "bald eagle".

1. Starlings? Starling, staring, String, Sting, Sing, sin, in, I? Assuming plurals count? Can't think of another one.
2. Love them, the feathered and human varieties both!!
3. Abyssinian roller, and the strong assertive type, feathered and human respectively!

I couldn't think of a word today.

I sure do love birds and when I had one that landed on my hand I was very intrigued by it. That one you have there is very interesting to. I love the markings on it.

One of my favourite birds is the plain house sparrow that used to be very common in Britain but is now declining in numbers.

A good answer. Please accept a consolation prize of a classic bottle of Mateus Rose:

The two nine-letter words are startling and stringier:
startling > starling > staring > string > sting > sing > sin > in > I
stringier > stingier > stinger > singer > singe > sing > sin > in > I

There may be other longer words but I haven’t come across them yet.
