Let’s imagine that you have been murdered!

What television detective would you like assigned to the case of finding your murderer?

My choice would be Columbo. Lieutenant Frank Columbo, a homicide detective from the Los Angeles Police Department, always gets the murderer. He does this while wearing a crumpled raincoat, smoking a cigar and rarely carrying a gun. And Columbo always solves his cases within an hour or two!

Nowadays, it is not common to see people smoke on screen. The two most popular UK soap series, EastEnders and Coronation Street, are often centred on a pub, but people smoking outside the pub are seldom seen. Given that over a quarter of the UK’s adult population smoke, this self-censorship seems strange.

 I'd pick Matlock!

He'd get to the bottom of it, and I don't think he smoked.

 Inspector Rebus I think, though Elijah Bailey from Asimov's I Robot was a fairly cool kinda guy (not the movie!!)
