GRAFFITI
GRAFFITI Above is some street art produced by the Argentinian Prostitutes’ Association (Ammar) to highlight the reality of in Argentina; 87 per cent of sex workers are single mothers. Banksy is perhaps the world’s most famous street artist (or graffiti artist, depending on your point of view). His art appeared anonymously in Bristol at first and then the rest of the UK, plus other countries. Banksy has done some fantastic graffiti on the wall the Israelis built to keep the Palestinians out in the West Bank. The right-wing press in this country have spent a lot of time trying to unmask the identity of Banksy; they have claimed that Banksy is Robin Gunningham and middle class. So?! Initially, UK local authorities used to remove the work of Banksy off the street but, since the art of Banksy has become very popular and the stuff of coffee table books, local authorities are now keen to keep his art on their streets. Earlier this year, one Banksy mural, Union Flag, was removed from the side of a shop in North London and later appeared for sale on a US auction site based in Florida. Both the shop and local authority complained of this theft but to no avail so far. The singer, Christina Aguilera, bought one Banksy picture of Queen Victoria riding a for £25,000. The actress, Angelina Jolie, spent £200,000 on his works in 2006, including £120,000 for his interpretation of an Édouard Manet painting in which a white family eat while being watched by starving black people. One of Banksy's murals sold for £288,000 to an American! Graffiti can be big business! Another very humorous (but less political) graffitist is the French artist, Clet Abraham, who goes around the world to ‘deface’ street signs. There’s no end to what he can do with no entry signs. Move over Banksy! Is graffiti art? If not, when does graffiti become street art? Who owns any graffiti or art on the streets? Do you like Banksy? [PS For some reason Affairlook changes the spelling of both Prostitition and to begin with a big 'P' rather than a little 'p'. I don't know why it would do this!] |

The street folks own the graffiti as they are the creators of it. Some of the Banksy art is very creative while others are a bunch of garbage. I seem to be drawn to this piece. hugs V Become a blog watcher sweet_vm

Never heard of Banksy? Graffiti can be art if done in the proper place. We have a big problem with graffiti here as they do it every where: private property--garages, fences, houses.

It's all vandalism, some of it good looking vandalism but vandalism just the same!

Graffiti is art after it moves beyond tagging but I've seen some shit-hot tags too... I'm actually a big fan of graffiti and often capture works with my cameraphone. If I was wealthy, I would commission some street artists to decorate a selection of walls in my home. It is vandalism only when it's done on a window that prevents the window from functioning for its intended purpose. A wall does not cease to be an efficient wall as a result of street art. My country and state are miserable dicks about graffiti and unnecessarily spend a lot of taxpayer's money on painting over it or somehow removing it... This further marginalises these creative people and earns them a lot of undeserved disdain and legal ramifications. The people who call this type of public art ugly should look in the mirror... Would they prefer the ugly, bland, grey walls that councils offer us to look at... That level of sterilization dumbs-down a society and deprives the mind of stimulus to critical thought processes which allows governments to reign supreme without dissent, even when there should be. Graffiti belongs to everybody... It's the artist's gift to the society he (or she) lives in and that society largely fails to appreciate the value of it. I like Banksy very much... Especially his mouse The Peace Wall in Belfast has some good street art, plus Bill Clinton's signature.

Tagging is pre-school for graffiti artists... They have to start somewhere.
