BOG SNORKELLING

Last weekend, the 28th World Bog Snorkelling Championships were held in the Waen Rhydd peat bog, near Llanwrtyd Wells, the UK's smallest town in mid-Wales.

Bog snorkelling involves people snorkelling in a bog trench. Competitors must wear snorkels and flippers; many competitors wear wet suits and goggles. They are not allowed to use a conventional swimming stroke, except the basic doggy paddle. Bog snorkelling is all about flipper power. The winner of a bog snorkelling event is the snorkeller who completes the course in the shortest time.

First held in 1985, the annual World Bog Snorkelling Championships have always been held in the same peat bog in Wales, though the 1995 championships were cancelled because of drought. At the world championships, bog snorkellers swim 120 yards in a trench cut in a peat bog. This year’s world championships attracted about 130 bog snorkellers from many countries (including Australia, Ireland, New Zealand and Sweden). The winner was a female bog snorkeller from Northern Ireland, Dineka Maguire; her winning time shattered the world record for the course.

On the same day as bog snorkelling, the World Bog Snorkelling Triathlon also takes place. This triathlon involves completing a fell run, a bog snorkel and a mountain bike ride. The partner of Dan Bent, the 2009 World Bog Snorkelling Triathlon champion, said, “Dan spent the months prior to the event flushing his head down the toilet to get acclimatized to the bog. He loves getting dirty!"

Would you like to a bog-snorkel?
Have you been snorkelling and/or scuba-diving?

I don't like water, so I'll never snorkel or scuba dive!

Meh, it's a natural to any native of New Jersey that has been to the bogs of the Pine Barrens. Of course, I've heard that the state has closed most of that off these days. Just memories now.
I hope some New Jersey bog snorkellers enterered the World Bog Snorkelling Championships.

Snorkelling in clear water seems far more sensible than bog snorkelling!

Bog snorkelling looks like snorkelling in mud more than water!

I've tried snorkelling but never scuba diving; it's on my wish list!
