BIG BROTHER  Following revelations of widespread electronic surveillance in the wake of the Edward Snowden affair, the US National Security Agency recently claimed it only monitored just 1.6 per cent of the 1,826 petabytes of information carried by the internet each day. Given that one petabyte is 1,000,000,000 megabytes (or 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes), it doesn’t sound a lot does it? According to Sandvine, less than 3 percent of internet information is email. And, according Kaspersky Labs, well over 70 per cent of all email is spam. Given that spam email is very easy to detect and is also of little or no interest to Western security agencies, this means that a significant proportion of email is monitored by the National Security Agency and other similar Western agencies, such as the UK’s GCHQ. The Pitcairn Islands, located in the South Pacific and once home of the HMS Bounty mutineers, is the world’s largest per capita source of spam email, not because its 50-or-so inhabitants send spam but because their computers have been remotely commandeered by a botnot system allowing criminals worldwide to send spam email via the islanders’ computers! I have nothing to hide but if my e-mail can be monitored, can't it also be manipulated? Snowden is a whistle-blower who blew a lot of politicians into bad light. If it were not him, then it would be someone else. My spam is a bit of a hodge-podge...but then, so is my life.

I think he's a whistle-blower! For all I know, my posts are monitored! I have no idea! My spam used to be about viagra, now it's mortgages (which I don't have) and loans, and health issues.

They can monitor me all they want. Sounds like a boring job to me.  Snowden is neither a spy or a patriot. He's a two bit hacker now hiding behind a shirtless, muscle flexing Putin.  I get a lot of X-rated spam.

Whistle-blower and patriot. It's not about "hiding something," it's about control. Have we forgotten George Orwell? A relative of mine was in the gubmint and I saw this years before it supposedly came about. Many years before New York. That only increased their power, it didn't start it. And the public still only sees the tip of the iceberg...
