TOM AND JERRY

TOM AND JERRY

When I was young, I used to love the Tom and Jerry cartoons. They were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera in the early 1940s and the cartoons were widely shown on television from 1965 onwards. The original Tom and Jerry series were awarded the most Oscars, equal with Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies, for an animated cartoon series.

But I often wanted the unlucky, hapless Tom Cat to get the better of the lucky, smug Jerry Mouse. I even wanted Tom to catch Jerry and play with him, as only cats can do, with their prey before eating him. Jerry’s death would not have meant the end of the cartoon series; in five cartoons, Tom died but he always came back to life for the next cartoon, well before JR Ewing came back to life in Dallas!

Here are five bits of Tom and Jerry trivia:
1. In the first cartoon, Tom was called Jasper and Jerry was referred to as Jinx by the animators! It was one animator, John Carr, who came up with Tom and Jerry as the names for the cat and mouse.
2. Tom and Jerry have not always been made in America; in the early 1960s, the cartoons were made in Czechoslovakia.
3. ‘Tom and Jerry’ was a common phrase for rioting young people in the nineteenth century, stemming from Pierce Egan’s 1823 book, Life in London, or Days and Nights of Jerry Hawthorne and his Elegant Friend Corinthian Tom.
4. In the UK, Tom and Jerry cartons were used extensively by the BBC when there was disruption in its television broadcasting.
5. The Tom and Jerry cartons have been criticised for its level of sadistic violence, racial stereotyping, smoking scenes and even cannibalism, but never for sex! In one DVD this disclaimer appeared: “The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in the U.S society. These depictions were wrong then and they are wrong today. While the following does not represent the Warner Bros. view of today's society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming that these prejudices never existed.”

Did you enjoy the Tom and Jerry cartoons?
What other cartoon series did you enjoy?
Can you remember Walt Disney’s Silly Symphonies carton series?
Were you a fan of Dallas? If so, who was your favourite character?

JR Ewing rocks, or rocked!

I like Tom and Jerry, but Bugs Bunny was better.

I really enjoyed the Animaniacs! (I still watch clips on the U toob.)

I might vaguely remember the Silly Symphonies.

I loved the theme song to Dallas and learned to play it on the trumpet. However when that theme song came on, it meant it was time for bed. (After watching The Dukes of Hazard and Knight Rider.) I do remember listening to the radio and the insanity surrounding "Who Shot JR?)

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

When in The Royal Navy in the sixties and seventies we had television rooms on shore bases,(the days before personal cabins).
When watching Tom and Jerry cartoons and the producers name Fred Quimby came up on the credits everyone in the room would shout out "Good old Fred" No matter what base it was in the world.

I was more Tom and Jerry than Bugs Bunny, though Bugs Bunny was good.

I watched Tom&Jerry. Also watched Bugs Bunny, Woody Woodpecker, Yogi Bear and Boo Boo, Donald Duck, Mickey Mouse, Mighty Mouse.
The so called cartoons they make these days or should I say animated such as Simpsons, King of the Hill, are not funny to me and I don't care to watch them.

I don't watch too many of the modern animated cartoons, though I have enjoyed The Simpsons and South Park when I catch them.
They seem more aimed at adults nowadays.

Although it's a long time since I've seen a Tom and Jerry cartoon - I don't recall seeing anything about racial prejudice in them.

I don't remember the racial stereotypin either, but those bits were frequently edited out of the cartoons after being originally shown.
