REDHEADS REVOLT  Over the weekend, more than 100 redheads staged the Ginger Pride Walk as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The Edinburgh Ginger Pride rally was organised by the comedian Shawn Hitchins, who is performing his show, Ginger Nation, at the festival. Shawn Hitchins, a gay Canadian redhead, said: "Even although it isn't a real word, gingerism exists and bullying exists and you can't deny that are being subjected to taunts or being bullied in schools just for having red hair. In Canada there's not a lot of redheads and for me as a really ridiculously gay , having red hair only heightened my sense of isolation because nobody looked like me, nobody lisped like me or burnt under the sun like I did." The maker of Scottish coca cola, Irn Bru, has run several ginger-themed advertising campaigns. One airline, Flybe, is hoping to break the world record for the most redheads on a plane later this month; the plane’s crew will also be redheads. In The Netherlands, Redhead Day is held every two years. It is not one day but three days of festivities held on the first weekend of September in Breda. About one percent of the world’s population and about four percent of Europe’s population are redheads, but about 13 percent of Scotland’s population - about 650,000 people - are redheads. Scotland, it is claimed, is home to nearly a fifth of the world's redheads. Red hair - or ginger, strawberry blonde and copper hair – results from a recessive (non-dominant) gene. People can have red hair even if their parents do not have red hair. My grandmother had red hair; I do not red hair, but my cousin’s have red hair. Though I say I do not have ginger hair, some people, having seen my main profile photo, say that my pubic hair is ginger-ish! Ginger is one of the best spices for food. LOL I am not a red redhead. I am an auburn. In the sun my hair looks like flames but in low light it he funny thing is, no matter what hair color I put in my hair, it comes out red. All my children have redish hair. Even the baby has red blonde. We only know of one true redhead in the family. That was my Grandmother. Like me, she had green eyes also. We have a touch of Scottish in our line. Maybe that's where it comes from. Does your facial hair also come in ginger?
