LET THEM EAT CAKE

The phrase, “Let them eat cake”, is often attributed to Marie Antoinette. She never said it!

Marie Antoinette was the wife of Louis XVI, the King of France at the time of the French Revolution. She was guillotined in 1793 in the revolutionary aftermath.

It is widely claimed that Marie Antoinette said, on hearing that peasants had no bread, “Qu'ils mangent de la brioche”. As brioche was made with butter and eggs, unlike bread, this phrase came to represent the alleged obliviousness of the French royalty to the plight of its people in a period of famine.

The phrase first appeared in Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s autobiography, Confessions. Though published in 1782, the French philosopher completed this book in 1769 when Marie Antoinette was 14 years old and five years before becoming the Queen of France! As she arrived in France from Austria in 1770, Marie Antoinette was not known to Rousseau at the time; she could not have been the Rousseau’s "great princess" uttering this phrase. Furthermore, there were no famines at the time when Marie Antoinette was Queen, though there were two bread shortages, including the Flour War, but they happened before the French Revolution started in 1789.

Some historians thought that pro-revolutionary journalists and historians falsely attributed the phrase to her in order to further justify the French Revolution. Lady Antonia Fraser, a biographer of Marie Antoinette, claimed the phrase, “Let them eat cake”, was said a century before by the wife of Louis XIV. As Winston Churchill once remarked, “History is written by the victors.”

Marie Antoinette appeared in Queen’s 1974 Killer Queen song:
She keeps Moet et Chandon
In her pretty cabinet
'Let them eat cake' she says
Just like Marie Antoinette

Freddie Mercury was wrong!

Do you like eating cake?
If so, what cakes do you like to eat?
Do you bake cakes?

I have only ever made one cake, a chocolate potato cake! But I do like cake. I like sponge cakes, ginger cakes, chocolate cakes, Bakewell tarts, egg custards, Victorian sponge cakes, custard slices, jam doughnuts, and chocolate choux buns.

The basic cake, white, yellow or chocolate. Now Icing is a different story, it, of course is great on a gake, but it also good on a saltine cracker as well as a nipple, belly button, pussy . and do I dare go one?

By the way most bakeries will sell you a quart of icinf for a fee, if you want to spread it on for yourself. /:>
I'm not keen on icing but perhaps I should try eating it in the ways you've suggested!
