BLACK TOT DAY
BLACK TOT DAY Today commemorates Black Tot Day. 31 July 1970 was the last day on which the UK’s Royal Navy issued its sailors with a daily rum ration, known as a tot. Until 1655, the Royal Navy used to issue a daily ration of a gallon of beer, but because of problems of storing large quantities of beer on board ships, rum replaced beer as the daily ration. A half pint of rum was given to each sailor instead. In 1740, because of problems of drunkenness aboard navy ships, the rum ration was to be mixed with water. This rum mix was called grog. In the nineteenth century, the navy rum ration was reduced for ratings and even abolished for officers. By 1969, the Admiralty Board decided that the rum ration was no longer conducive to the running of an efficient navy. On 28 January 1970, the House of Commons agreed, in the so-called Great Rum Debate, that the rum ration should be abolished. This decision was not popular with sailors despite an extra can of beer being added to their daily rations in compensation. Rum sometimes was known as Nelson’s blood in the mistaken belief that Admiral Nelson’s dead body was preserved in rum after being killed at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. His body was instead preserved in brandy. Brandy is my favourite spirit. It’s perhaps no wonder that What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor? is one of the country’s most popular sea shanties. I used to live in a naval port city, and whenever a navy ship came in that was the time not to go out to certain bars, pubs and clubs. Do you like rum? What are your favourite spirits? Have you ever served in a navy? PS Please accept my apologies for the photo. I could not find a photo of a black tot! |

I was on HMS Fife on that date and we were the last ship in the Royal navy to be issued with the daily rum ration. We were in Pearl Harbour at the time and because of the time difference - 10hrs we were last. A very memorable day for lots of reasons.

I like rum. Usually have a rum and Coke. I also like Jack Daniels. But around the house (which is where I do most of my drinking these days) I'll take shots of Jagermeister. Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Coconut rum in certain drinks but overall, not a fan. I am a vodka drinker...must be in my Russian blood. O come from a long line of Navy men. My Father served 30 years in the U.S. Navy.

As a man, I could only find fights with sailors where I lived.

I've not come across Four Bells rum, though I'm not a rum drinker.
