WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Sometimes it doesn’t matter, sometimes it does matter! Sometimes it's not the big things that matter but the little things!

Many years ago, I lived in a multiple-occupied house in London. There were six of us renting but there was always a high turnover of people in the rented house.

I made friends with one person in the house, Mary. She used to talk about one of her work colleagues, Jennifer, who was undergoing a sex change. At work, Mary was informed about his ongoing sex change by her manger, who asked everyone to acknowledge her change of sex. Mary was asked to call her work colleague Robert instead of Jennifer for he had become a she. This story enthralled us in the house and me in particular.

Mary moved out of the house. Jane moved into the house to replace Mary. Jane used to invite her brother along to the house a lot. She talked at length about her brother and what they both got up to in her past. Jane was very fond of her brother and his exploits in family life. I became friends to both Jane and her brother.

It soon became very apparent that Jane’s brother was Robert who worked at the same place as Mary did and that Robert was the person Mary was describing as having a sex change. When talking about Robert and her family past, Jane always impressively referred to her brother and never to her sister.

What would you do when you next talked to Jane?

I was in a quandary.

I'm bold, I would have asked outright. Letting it be known I was not judging, just confused.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

My quandary was I was a good friend of Jane's and she was unaware that the rest of her housemates knew that her brother was her sister. I ended up telling Jane that everyone knew. But I think I perhaps should have said nothing as her brother's journey wasn't just about a lifestyle change or a series of operations. It was also a re-writing of family history, especially the pronouns used in conversation.

That's what I did in the end, but I regretted it a little. I became part of Jane's brother's past that he wanted to leave behind.

Very true! I was much younger and in a rush.
