SOME COLOMBIAN?

The Colombian cyclist, Nairo Quintana, was awarded both the polka dot jersey for the best climber and the white jersey for the best young rider on the Tour de France. The Movistar cyclist was fearless in the mountains. While other riders struggled, grimaced and sweated, the poker-faced Colombian just sped up the mountains. He will be a future star of cycling.

Perhaps Quintana was using one of his country’s most famous exports, cocaine! For well over a thousand years, South American indigenous people often chewed the leaves of coca plants. When the Spanish Conquistadors first arrived, they initially ignored the native claims that coca leaves gave local people greater energy and strength. But, after realising the performance-enhancing effects of chewing coca leaves, the Spanish levied a tax on the growing of coca plants. Coca leaves were also widely used as an anesthetic.

It was not until the middle of the nineteenth century, that cocaine was isolated from the cocoa plant. Albert Niemann, a German university student, described the process of making cocaine in his 1860 thesis, Über eine neue organische Base in den Cocablättern. Niemann was awarded a PhD for his work; his thesis is lodged with the British Library.

Cocaine increases alertness and performance; it also induces feelings of euphoria, well-being and sexy-ness. I have tried cocaine. After struggling to snort the line of white powder up my nose, which kept dribbling out of my nose, I just felt more normal. It took me a few days to recover. I now know why cocaine is often taken on a Friday evening because the weekend is needed to recover in time for work on Monday morning! I have not taken cocaine again; it is highly addictive.

The American hip-hop artist, Grandmaster Flash, sang about the dangers of cocaine in his 1983 hit single, White Lines (Don't Don't Do It).

Have you ever taken cocaine?
If so, how did you feel?
If not, would you take cocaine if offered a line to snort?

I have done cocaine in all it's forms. It is a very euphoric feeling, but it's short lived and can leave you "chasing" that feeling and you will never be able to catch it.

The general consensus nowadays is that they "don't make it like they used to."

It's a wicked drug that I now avoid at all costs.

Read my diary Journal of a Taxi Driver for taxi stories and pictures of flowers and trees.

Nope .... have never tried it and never would.
I have no interest in drugs at all.

A few people I've met said it was like chasing but never catching that feeling.

Presumably it's the illegal drugs you don't like. It's interesting why some drugs are legal in one country but not another country, or legal in the past but not now.
