ABRACADABRA

Have you heard about the magic ambulance?
It turned into a hospital!

I tell this joke and other versions repeatedly to my nephew. We’ve had a magic plane turning into a storm, a magic car turning into a car park, a magic pedestrian turning into a shop, a magic boat turning into a harbour, a magic tractor turning into a field, a magic bike turning into a street, a magic helicopter turning into a cloud, etc. My nephew never tires of these jokes, nor do I!

Abracadabra is often used as a magic word. It is thought that the word derives from the Hebrew phrase, ‘a’bra dab’ra’, meaning ‘I create what I speak’.

Historically, it is claimed that the word derives from the ancient Aramaic language, which forms the basis for both the Arabic and Hebrew alphabets. It is believed that the word, when inscribed on an amulet, acted as a lucky charm for its wearer to ward off danger and to cure illness. The first written use of the word was in the third century book, Liber Medicinalis, written by Quintus Serenus Sammonicus who was the physician to the Roman Emperor, Caracella. He in prescribed that people with malaria should wear an amulet inscribed with the word, abracadabra.

What jokes do you tell ?
Who is your favourite magician?

My favourite magicians are Tommy Cooper, Penn and Teller, and, though not strictly a magician, Derren Brown.
