NATIONAL DAY OF SWEDEN
NATIONAL DAY OF SWEDEN Today is the National Day of Sweden. Below are nine bits of trivia about Sweden. 1. Sweden is one of the most equal countries in the world. It has the lowest income inequality in the world. Women make up nearly half of its parliament, the highest proportion of women lawmakers in the world. In 1862, Sweden became the first country to give the vote to women, albeit only married women and only for local elections. 2. Snus, a moist tobacco powder product, is widely chewed in Sweden. The production and consumption of snus is illegal in the rest of the European Union; Sweden negotiated an exemption from the ban. 3. In 1999, to combat , Sweden made it illegal to buy, not sell, sexual services. Since then, and in stark contrast to many other Western countries, street has been cut in half. The main reason why the law works is not because men are punished for buying sex but more because men are exposed as users. 4. Britain has never gone to war with Sweden, despite having gone to war with over 90 per cent of the countries in the world. 5. The song, Viva la Sauna Svedese (Long Live the Swedish Sauna) was written by Piero Umiliani for the soundtrack of the 1968 Italian film, Svezia, Inferno E Paradiso (Sweden: Hell and Heaven), a film about wild sexual activity in Sweden. The song was re-titled as Mah Nà Mah Nà, which has become very popular after being repeatedly played on The Benny Hill Show, The Muppet Show and Sesame Street. 6. This year, Sweden was named Europe’s ‘sex disease capital’ because Swedes are more likely than their European counterparts to seek treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases. Swedes tend to have more sexual partners, a half of young Swedes do not use condoms when having sex with a new partner, and 30 per cent of Swedes use no contraception. But the high level of treatment for sexually-transmitted diseases also reflects Swedes’ increased awareness about such diseases, very easy access to clinics for testing, and a law requiring Swedish people to tell past sexual partners if they are tested positive for many sexually-transmitted diseases. 7. Alfred Nobel was a Swedish nineteenth-century inventor, chemist, engineer, armaments manufacturer and philanthropist. He invented dynamite. He used his business fortune to posthumously fund the award of the prestigious Nobel Prizes in chemistry, economics, literature, medicine, peace, and physics. 8. Sweden has the highest number of McDonald's restaurants per capita in Europe, but still only about half of the US ratio. 9. With the song Waterloo, Abba won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest. Abba since went to become one of the biggest-selling bands of all time – over 370 million Abba records have been sold worldwide. In May 2013, Stockholm's unveiled a museum in honour of Abba, who last played together in 1982. The museum contains replicas of the office of the band’s manager, the band's studio, the band’s dressing room, the cabin on the island of Viggsö where Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus wrote the band’s songs, and even the kitchen of Björn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Fältskog's marital home. Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad were also married together. Do you like Abba? If so, what is your favourite Abba song? Do you think Abba will re-form? Have you visited Sweden? My favourite Abba song is Dancing Queen. I went out very briefly with a Swedish woman – she wasn’t blonde! Our relationship lasted three days, one long weekend in Stockholm! For some romantic reason, I prefer to see it as a very short relationship than a dirty weekend. |

I love ABBA......Take A Chance!! I don't think they will re-form Never been to Sweden...During the war, my Dad's nickname was "the Swede" because of his blonde hair. His heritage is actually Norweigan. It is another country I want to see besides the UK.

Sweden seems to be one of many people's favourite countries after their own native country.

I have it on good authority that the photo is not fake and it is really of Agnetha and Anni-Frid!

I wonder whether that's why the Aussie, Julian Assange, doesn't want to go back to Sweden. He is still incredibly holed up in the Ecuadorian embassy, surrounded by police, in London.
