THE T-SHIRT

T-shirts evolved from 19th century undergarments. As outer-garments, they became a popular form of workwear for miners, stevedores and farmworkers in the late 19th century. Also, the US Navy issued T-shirts to its sailors during this period. After the Second World War, T-shirts were often worn as casual clothing. Marlon Brando wore a T-shirt in the 1951 film, A Streetcar Named Desire. And a few decades later, T-shirts were sometimes worn as smart clothing. In the mid-1980s, Don Johnson appeared in a T-shirt while wearing an Armani suit in Miami Vice.

Since the 1950s, and particularly from the 1980s onwards, T-shirts were increasingly manufactured emblazoned with designs and slogans. T-shirts have increasingly become objects for advertising, artistic expression, fashion, comic effect and political protest.

The Chinese government has recently imposed controls on the wearing of T-shirts to prevent political protest. In the city of Kunming, people buying a white T-shirt must also provide their name, address and telephone number, plus the number of T-shirts they want to buy. Government officials have justified these controls as a way of promoting “stability maintenance”!

A Sri Lankan, Sanath Bandara, is the current holder of the Guinness World Record for ‘Most T-shirts Worn at Once’. He wore 257 T-shirts on 22 December 2011.

When do you wear T-shirts?
What is or was your favourite T-shirt?
How many T-shirts do you own?

I wear T-shirts a lot - work and play, plus sleep if cold. My favourite T-shirt was one I bought in the 1980s that had the emblem of the Italian Communist Party emblazoned on it. I still wear it, despite being tattered!

I don't call them t-shirts, but they are pull overs with 3 buttons at the neck. I wear them all the time! I probably have at least 20!
They are plain colors with no logo.

They are known as polo shirts in the UK.

I also prefer plain T-shirts. I'm not keen on being a walking advert for some brand.

I've always wondered whether they are called polo shirts after the game of polo.

I wonder whether the male seahorse does anything after giving birth to baby seahorses!
