THE HISTORY OF MASTURBATION

THE HISTORY OF MASTURBATION

There’s still a few days left in May to mark National Masturbation Month. Below is a photo of an early 15th century statue in the Sukuh temple on the slopes of Mount Lawu on the Indonesian island of Java.

Unlike the ancient Egyptians, the ancient Greeks and Romans regarded masturbation as a normal and pleasurable activity. The Greek philosopher Diogenes believed masturbation was the height of pleasure. Later, the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius proposed that abstaining from masturbation caused madness.

It was not until the so-called Age of Enlightenment in the 16th and 17th centuries that masturbation was widely viewed as an abnormal activity. Mels van Driel, in his book With the Hand, claimed widespread negative views towards masturbation started in this period when people started to think that rational human beings should keep their animal urges under control. Over 60 per cent of mental and physical illnesses, it is claimed, were blamed on masturbation.

Though religion often condemned masturbation, it was not until the Enlightenment Period that masturbation became condemned by wider society, particularly by the medical establishment. In the book Solitary Sex, Thomas Laqueur saw the publication of John Marten's 1712 book, Onania; Or, the Heinous Sin of Self Pollution and All Its Frightful Consequences, as very influential in changing attitudes towards masturbation from an innocent pleasure to a guilty pleasure. John Marten, a London quack, believed that masturbation was a curable vice; his book was no more than a big advertisment for his potions to treat masturbation.

Other, and more extreme, cures for masturbation were prescribed. At the turn of the 19th century, the German-American paediatrician Abraham Jacobs advised that a boy caught masturbating should have his penis lacerated to induce ulcers. In 1866, the gynaecologist Isaac Baker Brown carried out nearly 50 clitoridectomies (operations to remove the clitoris) on girls in his London Surgical Home. Between 1932 and 1956, 33 patents were issued in the US for devices to prevent masturbating, including an alarm that went off if a 's bed shook.

It was only the First World War when medical attention shifted away from treating masturbation, presumably because doctors had better things to do. The 1960s further shifted views on masturbation for it to be seen as a normal activity.

However, some African tribes today have no word for masturbation and are utterly confused when introduced to the idea of masturbation.

Were you ever encouraged or discouraged to masturbate?
Did you teach yourself masturbation?
Were you ever told that masturbation would make you blind?

This may be cliche but...when I was a young teen, I was hyper-kinetic. Sleep did not happen often or easily. I was also 13 years old and in high school. I started seeing a shrink to help cope with being so yound and dealing with older teens because I was so far advanced. My shrink put me under hypnosis and left a suggestion. When I have trouble sleeping, masturbate to orgasm. I fall right to sleep after. (Only at night when I am in sleep mode though.) When I have sex and orgasm, I am energized.
This same shrink was my mentor through college and my early professional career. I asked many times but he never would tell me what other triggers he suggested under hypnosis.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

The Discovery Channel needs to discover this history, otherwise it'll be forgotten!

Masturbation certainly sounds better than sleeping pills to get to sleep!

Were you ever encouraged or discouraged to masturbate? Never discouraged, but my sister enjoyed seeing me do it so I guess you could say encouraged.

Did you teach yourself masturbation? No, my sister started masturbating me at a very young age. It was only after I once ejaculated that I started perfecting the act.

Were you ever told that masturbation would make you blind? Had heard of it but no one actually said that to me.

My brother did not do that to me!
