ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR

Following a comment by [blog mystelle], this blog post is dedicated to Australia. My knowledge of Australia is limited; I’ve never visited Australia. But here is some Australia trivia:

Advance Australia Fair, the Australian national anthem, was written by the Scottish-born schoolteacher, Peter Dodds McCormick.

In some Australian Aboriginal tribes, the holding of the penis is traditionally used as a gesture to express male allegiance and cooperation, as well as a ritual to resolve disputes.

In 1992, the Australian Prime Minister, Paul Keating, touched the Queen as he guided her through a crowd. Royal convention states that you do not touch the Queen. Monarchists dubbed him ‘The Lizard of Oz’ after this act of lèse-majesté! In 2011, the Australian Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, refused to curtsey to the Queen. Royal convention also states that you curtsey or bow when introduced to the Queen!

Rolf Harris, the Australian 83 year-old entertainer who has lived in Britain for over 50 years, was recently arrested on a historic sex assault charge.

Survey research has found that Australian women have sex on the first date more than women the same age in the US and Canada.

What are the best things to come out of Australia?
What are the worst things to come out of Australia?
Have you been to Australia?
Will Australia ever become a republic?

When I think of Australia, I think of the Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera House, boomerangs and didgeridoos, Bondi Beach, Neighbours, Pat Cash and Rod Laver, the outback, crocodiles and sharks, Paul Hogan, Waltzing Matilda, Eucalyptus trees, Evonne Goolagong Cawley, coal, not a republic (yet), Sydney Olympics, aborigines, Uluru (or Ayers Rock), kangaroos and wallabies, Harry Kewell (ex-Leeds United footballer), Dame Edna Everage, billabongs, sport (especially cricket and swimming), Clive James, penal colonies, Cathy Freeman and Ian Thorpe, Gallipoli Campaign, Nicole Kidman, Australian Open Tennis Championships at Melbourne, pommies and barbies, Richie Benaud, Koala bears, and Kookaburra birds.

What do you think about when you think of Australia?

For me, the best things to come out of Australia are Nick Cave, Kylie Minogue and the Australian irreverence towards the United Kingdom. The worst things are Rupert Murdoch, Fosters lager and Steve Irwin, who, after getting rich and famous for goading wild animals, died after being stung by a stingray.

INXS is probably the best or AC/DC...
The worst...Paul Hogan (here in the US, after his movie came out, we had to listen to every neanderthal who worshiped Rocky Balboa, start using a fake Australian accent and tell everyone to put a shrimp on the barbie...obviously a sore issue for me...)
I have been. In the '90s. It was very cool. I liked the coastal areas much more than the outback. The food was fantastic and the people friendly.
I think Australia will become a republic when the US starts acting like one...Currently we live under a dictatorship.
I think of great music, great food and wild country.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I have never been to Australia, but would like to visit someday.
A lot of actors and musicians have come out of Australia:
Keith Urban...Nicole Kidman

There's a wonderful series on beeb 2 started last night with Simon Reeve, going around Aus, well worth a watch!

1. Sense of humour, irony, ability to take the piss.
2. Ungraciousness in defeat.
3. Yes, many times, fabulous, stunning, beautiful, awe inspiring, big, and I've only scratched its surface.
4. Probably, and why not, its Asian population is growing all the time, why would they want our Queen?
5. Sun, dry, desert, coldies, smiles and banter!

INXS were good. I didn't like Crowded House or Men at Work though.
