The thong, I guess, is the modern equivalent of the loincloth worn by men in sub-Sahara Africa nearly 75,000 years ago. The word, thong, derives from the old English word, thwong, a flexible leather cord.

Fashion historians think that the thong first appeared in the 1939 World's Fair in New York as a result of the city’s mayor, Fiorello LaGuardia, ordering the naked dancers to cover themselves. The thong was thus invented for the dancers to dance almost naked.

In her 2004 book, Striptease: The Untold History of the Girlie Show, Rachel Steir argued that the thong “derived from the stripper's G-string". Gary Luke and Susan Quinn, in their 2003 Americanisms book, believed the thong can be attributed to “strippers circa 1936”.

The fashion designer, Rudi Gernreich, created the first thong bikini in 1974. Thong swimwear for women has remained popular since, especially in the Baywatch 1990s.

Thongs have also become increasingly popular as female and male underwear. Recent surveys have found that over 25 per cent of American women most prefer to wear thong underwear. Thongs are also made for . An Abercrombie & Fitch spokesman once stated that he could list "at least 100 reasons why a young girl would want thong underwear."

I’m not a big fan of thongs, either wearing or looking at them. They are uncomfortable to wear for a long period of time.

 1. Never tried it, they look too uncomfortable to me.
2. No, I find them unattractive, much prefer a nice bum framed in a full bikini cut, though not entirely sure why.
3. Well, if she likes cheese at the end of a meal...............

Do you like looking at people wearing a thong? If they have a really nice body sure! I get very turned-on looking at them. But if they are really out of shape (Wal-Mart specials), it's a MAJOR turn-off.

Can you think of any reason why a young girl should wear a thong? There's no reason anyone SHOULD wear a thong. That said we must first define 'young girl'. If under 18 DEFINITELY NO! If over 18, they just need to be extremely careful of what wearing virtually nothing may attract, preferably not be running around alone in such attire, or lack thereof.
