IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS

Do you have a pet? If so, what pet (or pets) do you have?
What do you like about your pet?
Are you a or a cat person?

I used to be a person but now I’m a cat person. I love a cat’s attitude! Cats just do what they want. I am writing this blog with two cats doing exactly what they want in my apartment. If there’s reincarnation, please let me come back as a cat!

Etymologists, who study the origins of words, do not know how the phrase ‘it’s raining cats and dogs’, describing a downpour of rain, came about.

The first recorded use of the phrase was in the 1651 collection of poems, Olor Iscanus, penned by the poet, Henry Vaughan, who wrote “dogs and cats rained in shower.” In 1738, Jonathan Swift published his Complete Collection of Genteel and Ingenious Conversation, in which one of characters fears that it will “rain cats and dogs.”

Etymologists think the phrase may come from the Nordic mythology of the Norse god of storms, Odin, or from the Greek term, cata doxa, meaning contrary to experience or belief; or even from an old English word, catadupe, and old French word, catadoupe, meaning a waterfall.

Do you like knowing the historical origins of words?

I was a dog person until he passed. I know what you mean by cats occupy themselves as they please, when they please.
I could use some of that burst of energy cats display. Our persian used to jump up and dash about in a sprint right from a straight from a nap. He was walking through the kitchen one Saturday morning - meowed in pain - fell over dead right then.

I have a "fat" cat!

She loves to lay on my chest, be petted, then lays on pillow and sleeps for the night.

I have been a cat person from the day of my birth. My mothers cat had kittens under my crib the day I was born. I had cats until a cat I had for 12 years died. It was a long time before I considered a pet again. MB and I decided to adopt a dog. We went to the pound to look at one dog and fell in love with another. We now have 2 dogs. They take care of me as much as I care for them. After my last surgery, Tug, my cocker spaniel, would lay on the bed with me during recovery. He would bring me toys to throw and he would fetch them.
As to word origins...love them. As I get older, I find myself looking into such things just as a curiosity. I am also the type to read phone books and almanacs just for fun.

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

I used to keep fish, loved them, but they died when I moved house.

I do think there's something odd about a world in which so much money is spent on keeping pets for human entertainment and comfort, yet tens of thousands die of hunger daily! Sorry for the mini-rant!

Words are fascinating, origins are intriguing. I heard an article on the radio this morning about the ever increasing poor use of grammar, it's a worry I tell ye!

Thanks for your comment.
The saying, 'you own a dog but a cat owns you' is very apt.

It was always my job on the farm to collect the newly-laid eggs. I got quite attached to the hens!

One of my cats was very fat. My Dad was looking after him and, every time one of his carers came in, the cat got fed. He was fed six times a day and got very fat!

I've been brought up with both cats and dogs. As I live in a city centre apartment now, I can only keep a cat.

I once kept some tropical fish - black mollies, red swordtails and sucking loaches were my favourites!

I hadn't noticed the dogs' cropped ears, sorry!
It is illegal to crop the ears of the dogs in Britain. the photo must be quite old or taken in a country where cropping is still legal. Though the photo looks like it was taken in London.
