WHAT ARE YOU SCARED OF?

WHAT ARE YOU SCARED OF?

Are you scared of mice? Are you scared of spiders, snakes, sharks, the sea, heights, caves, public speaking, failure, or the dark? Are you scared of anything?

When meeting one of my friends for a drink, he always used to say to me with a certain smile when we parted to walk back home late at night, “Please be careful, I wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to you.”

Fear is a rational response to a situation, often provoking a ‘fight or flight’ response. A fear of sharks in certain seas, and taking precautionary measures when swimming, is rational.

A phobia is an irrational fear where the risks of something bad happening are greatly exaggerated, often resulting in behavioural and physiological symptoms being exhibited (eg avoidance, vertigo, panic attacks). A fear of sharks in street puddles, and not going out to shop when it is raining, is irrational.

According to livescience.com, the following are the ten top phobias: dentists (dentophobia); dogs (cynophobia); flying (aviophobia); thunder and lightning (astraphobia); the dark (nyctophobia); heights (acrophobia); people (anthropomorphobia), large spaces (agoraphobia), insects (entomophobia); and snakes (ophidiophobia).

I would have thought that the fear of enclosed spaces, claustrophobia, would have made this list. I am slightly claustrophobic. When I went caving, I did not feel at all good. I’m also not good at flying, but I love spiders. My biggest fear is the fear of dying, not the fear of death, though I don’t think I’m thanatophobic!

There is a phobia of public speaking (glossophobia) a fear of sex (genophobia), and even a phobia of phobias, phobophobia. The list seems endless!

Does anyone suffer from the aibohphobia, the fear of palindromes? I do love a good palindrome!

Do you have any fears or phobias?
If so, how do you deal with them?

I like spiders, but we don't have any poisonous ones in Britain. x

I like a good rollercoaster, though the log flume is my favourite fairground ride.
