THUNDERBIRDS ARE GO

David Miliband is a Thunderbird!

The brother of the Labour Party leader, Ed Miliband, who stood against his younger brother and lost the Labour Party’s leadership election in 2010, has recently announced that he is going to stand down from British politics and become the chief executive of International Rescue Committee, an international humanitarian aid agency based in New York.

Their father, Ralph Miliband, was a leading Marxist intellectual in Britain.

Do you feel sorry for David Miliband losing out to his younger brother to be the Labour Party leader and now deciding to abandon British politics (for the time being!)?

Thunderbirds was a hit and now cult puppet-based television series created by Gerry Anderson. Thunderbirds were the rescue craft of the secret organisation, International Rescue, saving the world from bad people.

Who was your favourite Thunderbird character?
And what number was your favourite Thunderbird?

My favourite Thunderbirds characters were Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward and Aloysius Parker. Lady Penelope was International Rescue’s secret agent in London. Parker was her dutiful chauffeur, driving Lady Penelope around in a pink Rolls Royce, with the FAB1 number-plate.

Below is the script of a conversation between Lady Penelope and Parker in a Thunderbirds programme:

Lady Penelope: "Parker, take my coat off, please"
Parker: "As you wish, m'lady"
Lady Penelope: "Parker, take my jacket off, please"
Parker: "As you wish, m'lady"
Lady Penelope: "And now Parker, take my bra off"
Parker: "Goodness, madam, really? This is so embarrassing!"
Lady Penelope: "Get on with it, Parker, and while you are at it take my knickers off as well ... and don't let me ever catch you wearing them again"

Thunderbirds was big in the UK and Japan, but never quite made it big in the US. But the film, Team America: World Police, was clearly influenced by Thunderbirds.

Also inspired by Thunderbirds, the International Rescue Corps was established in Scotland as a disaster rescue volunteer organisation involved in disaster rescue. This organisation is not the same as the International Rescue Committee that David Miliband, married to an American violinist, will head up on a big salary in New York.

I want to be a Thunderbird if it means living in New York on a big salary while saving the world!

I preferred Captain Scarlet - I was in love with Destiny Angel

Oh that brought back memories!

There is a difference between a good BJ and a bad BJ.

International Rescue's David Miliband successfully undertook a Thunderbirds mission. He resigned from the Sunderland football club's board of directors in protest of the appointment of Paoli Di Canio as the club's head coach.
Di Canio once described himself as "a fascist, not a racist". More recently, he declared, rather conveniently, that he does not support the ideology of fascism.

I hate to say it - As a kid I felt there was something creepy about these puppets. I remember being interested in the story, but always watched with a sense of dread.

I can see why the Thunderbirds puppets seem creepy but they sure knew how to do international rescue! The world needs them now!
