JAPANESE BONDAGE  Japanese bondage is sometimes known as kinbaku or shibari. In the Japanese language, kinbaku means ‘the beauty of tight binding’, and shibari means ‘to tie’ or ‘to bind’. Some people distinguish kinbaku, the erotic and sexual practice of bondage, from shibari, the aesthetic and artistic practice of bondage. Shibari involves specific forms of bondage patterns, known as katas, made following strict rules. These patterns include turtle binding (kikkou), shrimp binding (ebi), and suspension binding (tsuri). Kinbaku - bondage as a sexual activity - became prominent in the middle of the nineteenth century in the late Edo period when Japan was ruled by the Tokugawa shogunate. Seiu Ito, a Japanese painter, is widely recognised as the ‘father of kinbaku’. Kinbaku became very popular in the 1950s and 1960s in Japan, with dedicated magazines, clubs and performers. A bondage performer is called a nawashi or bakushi. Kinbaku is now an established part of the BDSM scene. There are many Japanese bondage classes that can be taken around the world. Japanese rope, called asanawa and usually made from hemp or jute, is brilliant for bondage as it is very easy to tie and untie. It is far better than ties for bondage.
